The Market at Sickles Farm is seeking a garden center buyer to join its exceptional team! The Garden Center Buyer will be responsible for selecting and purchasing plants, gardening supplies and other related items for the garden center while ensuring the center has the appropriate stock to meet customer needs and market demands while also considering factors such as: quality, price and seasonal trends.
Description
A Garden Center Buyer is responsible for the following job duties and responsibilities that include but are not limited to:
- Monitors purchase agreements*
- Ensures that quality, quantity, price and delivery specifications are met.
- Tracks, manages and resolves garden center purchasing problems in a timely and efficient manner*
- Maintains positive relationships with garden center vendors*
- Investigates sales and promotional opportunities for the garden center
- Purchases garden center inventory and buying functions in accordance with established company policies, procedures and within the budget.
- Maintains knowledge of all available products and ingredients
- Collaborates with garden center sales associates on strong retail and business need for products
- Checks and manages product inventory in the garden center*
- Researches and secures new garden center vendors as retail and business needs evolve.
- Creates and maintains a current list of recommended vendors for the garden center based on price, availability and quality
- Receives and coordinates deliveries
- Stays informed on current and seasonal plant varieties and gardening trends

Required knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Possess current industry knowledge of retail garden center products and materials
- Possess working knowledge of Garden Center products, including live plants, varieties, fertilizers, and hard goods
- Possess working knowledge of plant biology and care, horticulture, gardening techniques and common plant pests and diseases
- Possess general knowledge of live plant care and plant installation
- Proficient in retail math
- Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office, including MS Excel and MS Word
- Able to make quick, sound, informed decisions in a fast-paced environment
- Possess strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Possess proficient communication skills in English (to accurately convey information or ideas) in a manner that is understood
- Possess the Ability to work alone or as part of a team dynamic
- Able to proficiently read in English.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- Must have at least 2 years of retail experience
- Must have at least 1 year of garden center experience
Required education or certifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
Working Conditions; Job Requirements and Physical Demands / Requirements that relate directly to the essential job duties and functions:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 90% of the workday
- Must be able to move or traverse for 90% of the workday
- Must be able to ascend and descend stairs or ladders
- Must be able to position oneself to stoop, bend or crouch to carry out the job duties
- Frequently move, transport, position, put, install, or remove objects or items that are up to 40 pounds for 10 feet
- Work in an environment that features hot and cold temperature variations
- Work indoors and outdoors
- Work in an environment in which you are exposed to food allergens
