As a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer at our new Siemens Energy Power Transformers Factory in Charlotte, North Carolina you will be responsible for preparing Master layout Designer of Power Transformer & Technical summary of Power transformers Customer Specifications as well as for achieving design innovations and the optimization of the end products in compliance to Siemens Energy design rules, quality standards, cost position and time schedule. Candidate will be responsible for Mechanical Design for order execution (detailed design) as well as for customer documents/drawings of Tanks & Externals.

This role will be based at our new factory in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, and will initially coincide with the factory’s construction. During this phase, we will focus on developing our processes, refining our offerings, and collaborating closely with a high-performance team. This will involve all aspects of the commercial setup to ensure we are well-prepared to meet the needs of our customers effectively when factory operations start.

How You’ll Make an Impact:

  • Prepare master layout in collaboration with electrical, leads, tank and clamping designers.
  • Define the dimensions and shape of tank after analyzing the transport profile, active part dimensions, leads routing etc.
  • Define the placement of active part, bushings, tap changer, internal and external clearances
  • Use 2D and 3D CAD software to model designs and individual parts to support the generation of engineering drawings and prepare bills of material.
  • Understand customer specifications and project requirements and prepare technical summary/order datasheet to be used as an input by the electrical, mechanical and control/wiring design engineers.
  • Prepare/guide preparation of customer documentation like general outline, foundation, shipping/transport, valve schedule, etc.
  • Prepare Technical Specifications & order tanking components like fans, pumps, radiators, valves, accessories, hardware etc.
  • Learn transformer design rules and use of design calculation tools related to active part, leads, tank and other structural parts
  • Perform mechanical calculations like stiffener, lifting, centre of gravity, oil & weights etc. and sizing/selecting of accessories like MOG, fan, pumps, terminals, cable routing, breather, valves, bellows etc.
  • Perform advanced calculations like structural, seismic (eg. using ANSYS, CREO simulate)


What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's, master’s degree or equivalent experience in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • 5 years working experience as a mechanical design engineer or tank design engineer or lead designer preferably for Power Transformers above 100MVA/220kV
  • Strong conceptual knowledge and working experience in preparation of master layout deciding shape of tank, transport profile, active part dimensions, leads routing, and defining the placement of active part, bushings, tap changer, internal and external clearances.
  • Understanding of power transformer customer specifications and site/project requirements.
  • Familiar with the American & international standards (eg. IEEE, ANSI, IEC) related to transformer
  • Experience with 3D CAD software (eg. CREO/PROe/Inventor), PDM Link or Teamcentre, 2D CAD (eg. AUTOCAD) and software tools to create Bill of materials eg.
  • Detailed knowledge of materials and components related to tank and externals
  • If not already located in or around the Charlotte, NC area, the selected candidate must be willing to relocate.
