Position Overview:
Custodians play a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across the University’s diverse facilities, including academic buildings, athletic venues, offices, and residence halls. Key responsibilities include thorough cleaning of assigned areas such as lounges, kitchens, public and private restrooms, staircases, hallways, custodial closets, windows, doors, and walls.
Custodians utilize a range of cleaning products and equipment, including vacuums, carpet extractors, and both slow and high-speed buffers, to ensure high standards of cleanliness. As essential personnel, custodians are required to be on call for emergency situations outside of regular working hours and during inclement weather.
In addition to their cleaning duties, custodians are expected to deliver exceptional customer service to a diverse population of internal and external stakeholders, fostering a positive and supportive campus atmosphere.
Essential Responsibilities:
· Clean and sanitize surfaces in classrooms, offices, restrooms, and shared spaces.
· Maintain meeting rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, and other public areas.
· Sanitize washroom floors and fixtures; replenish soap and paper products.
· Perform floor care tasks: sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing.
· Remove and dispose of garbage, recycling, and waste properly.
· Clean walls, ceilings, and vent covers; use ladders as needed.
· Maintain lighting fixtures and change bulbs as necessary.
· Wash windows and clean blinds, sills, and furniture.
· Clear building entrances of snow, ice, and debris.
· Ensure work areas are clean and tools are maintained.
· Set up tables and chairs for events as directed.
· Move furniture and supplies as needed.
· Follow safety guidelines for cleaning supplies and report any facility damage.
· Maintain adequate housekeeping supplies and inform the supervisor of needs.
· Assist with event setup and cleanup for campus activities.
· Provide custodial coverage in various areas as needed.
· Ensure quality standards for custodial services are met.
· Submit maintenance requests when necessary.
· This is an essential position requiring attendance during university closures.
· Respond to custodial emergencies as needed.
· Participate in required training and perform other assigned duties.
Qualifications, Experience, Abilities and Skills Required:
Education/Certification:
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Valid driver’s license.
Professional Experience:
· One year experience with primary duties as a custodian, or an equivalent combination of experience to equal one-year full time.
· One year experience maintaining a variety of floor surfaces using auto-scrubbers, burnishers, buffers, carpet extraction vacuums, and other commercial cleaning equipment is preferred.
· Must be able to perform all duties in the job classification with or without a reasonable accommodation.
