Job Purpose: Perform general accounting functions including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting and financial statement analysis for Mendocino Railway, Sierra Northern Railway and Sierra Energy.
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Perform close process activities, including calculating and posting adjusting journal entries, researching, and documenting unusual GL account trends or budget-vs-actual variances, and preparing close process reporting.
- Reconcile cash accounts and balance sheet accounts monthly, including researching and resolving reconciling items in a timely manner.
- Actively maintain the sub-ledgers and supporting documentation for fixed assets, prepaids, accrued expenses, and debt.
- Create and distribute weekly, monthly, quarterly and ad-hoc financial and operational reports, including working with management to understand unusual trends or budget-vs-actual variances.
- Analyze financial results and provide variance analysis.
- Support the budgeting and forecasting process.
- Assist with preparation of monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Assist with month-end and year-end close.
- Performs ad-hoc analyses to support companies.
Support preparation for all annual audit requests and schedule of audits.Reviews and analyzes internal financial data to identify issues, opportunities, and trends.
- Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Expert level knowledge of general financial accounting.
- Demonstrated ability to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles.
Proven management-level skills in financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting with a strong history of accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
Ability to communicate with multiple organizational levels in an effective and collaborative manner.Ability to communicate financial information to stake holders.Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information.Knowledge of QuickBooks, Microsoft Suite, payroll, and tax reporting systems.Accounting and sub-system implementations of new software.Advanced excel skills.Qualifications
- Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP for financial statements and common accounting practices related to fixed assets, prepaid, accrued expenses, debt, and recognition of revenue and related cost of sales, operating expenses, and depreciation.
- At least five years in a role performing common accounting functions, including balance sheet reconciliations, financial statement close processing, posting journal entries, and preparing reports and analyses for financial and business users.
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance.
Level of Supervision: Receives moderate supervision and general direction as to goals and achievement of those goals. Evaluated based on the successful achievement of goals.
Working Conditions and Travel
Well-lighted, heated and air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation. Minimal overnight travel by land and air.
