Shift: 8:00am - 4:30pm
Job Description:
PATIENT POPULATION:
The patient population served can be all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the VP of Patient Care Services/Chief Nurse Executive & Chief Academic Officer, the Health Care Interpreter performs a variety of interpreting activities both English and Spanish to facilitate communication between patients, families, hospital staff and healthcare providers. Must also have substantial knowledge of Medical Terminology in both languages.
Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a high school diploma or equivalent.
To perform this job successfully, Medical Terminology proficiency is required.
Previous experience as a Health Care Interpreter in a clinical setting is preferred. Ability to speak, read and interpret medical and technical language in Spanish (or other required language).
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must meet one of the following requirements: A. Be a member of the Healthcare Interpreter Network - HCIN (This requires a minimum of 40 hours of training through a commercial or national interpreter testing company, AND sucessfully passing of a Interpreter Skills Assessment), or B. Posess a State of California or National Interpreter Certification. If a Candidate does not posess certification at the date of hire, but has interpreter training through an accredited school/college, SVMC and HCIN MAY arrange testing for certification within six (6) months of the hire date. Current BLS provider card required or obtain during the orientation period prior to hands on care.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

1 * Uses English and Spanish (or other required language) to explain complicated medical procedures, medical diagnoses, treatment options, healthcare provider instructions and other information regarding treatment and medical care required for patients.
2 * Through interpretation, adapts a wide range of concepts, theories and emotions to serve the communication needs of the involved parties. Adapts the interpretation process to the individual communication needs of others based on their fluency, language skills, cultural needs and desires and/or other communication barriers.
3 * Uses English and Spanish skills to assist healthcare providers in obtaining patients' physicals, histories and symptoms of disorders, may obtain informed consent from the patient, next of kin or legal guardian to receive treatment. Explains and interprets patients' rights and responsibilities.
4 * Uses English and other required language skills to explain and interpret hospital policies, procedures, protocols, forms and documents to patients, families and other involved parties.
5 * Be in attendance on site and arrive to work on time.
