The company tenders provide fast, accurate professional offloads to our fishing fleet. Our vessels need to be clean, mechanically sound and showing the pride we take in our vessels. We provide the best services with clean fuel, fresh water and cold RSW water delivered at a fast rate. Silver Bay is always looking to maximize fishermen opportunity, as a company tender, we need to find a way to keep them fishing. This can be by supporting them with on water repairs or running out to them to take fish on the grounds. Our fishermen need to be treated equally and feel that their catch information is confidential, so we maintain their trust and respect.

 

Our company depends on our fishermen owners being successful and our Silver Bay tenders play a major role in that. Being a Silver Bay Seafoods Captain is above and beyond just driving the vessel, its never settling and always striving to be better.


 

Summary

Silver Bay Seafoods is currently looking for a Vessel Captain that encompasses our Mission, Vision and Values. In this role as the Vessel Captain, you will ensure that the Tender vessel is seaworthy; fueled and supplied and the vessel is equipped with all needed gear to perform the tendering it is participating in. You will be responsible to make sure all equipment is tested and operational including the RSW system. You will be encouraged to hire qualified crew members and assigns their duties.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Take part in the hiring of all crew for your vessel.
  • Daily operation of the vessel.
  • Communicate with Vessel Manager and the port engineer to obtain vendor and shore support when necessary to minimize downtime and maintain maximum efficiency when engaged in Tendering opera
  • Having a working knowledge of your vessel in case there is a need to move or operate without normal crew. Being able to operate the crane, turn on hydraulics, haul the anchor, pump out the vessel, run the refrigeration, or solve any unforeseen issues on board if the need arises. Silver Bay expects all their captains to be able to run the basic systems on their vessel.
  • Overseeing that the vessel and crew are maintaining the best quality of fish on board. This is very essential to our company, and you must make sure fish quality is one of the main focuses while taking fish and maintaining temperatures to keep quality exceptional.
  • Making sure all policies of Silver Bay Seafoods and the Coast Guard rules are adhered too. We assume all workers are free of illegal drugs every day while under our employment and not reporting for or being on the job under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, or drugs.
  • Maintain quality fish handling on deck and temperature in the holds to ensure the company tenders set the standard on quality for all tenders.
  • Assisting and overseeing ship repairs on company vessels if your skill set is needed for a project. This may be a vessel other than the one you operate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

In this role as the Vessel Captain, you will be held to the high standards below

  • Leadership: The Captain will set the culture of the vessel by the way they act. This will earn the respect of the crew and get them moving in the same direction with common purpose and goals. The captain must also get out on the deck to make sure the operation is flowing smoothly and efficiently.
  • Communication: As captain you must keep the vessel manager and port engineer informed of needs for the vessel. This includes crew travel, personnel changes and parts needed. Any injuries or medical concerns need to be communicated to the vessel manager immediately.
  • Management: The captain must be able to manage the crew to keeping them buying fish and maintaining the vessel. This includes painting, repairs, organizing supplies and parts on the vessel. Many of our vessels use similar equipment and having a knowledge of parts on board is critical if we have a breakdown on the water. The expectation is that Silver Bay vessels will be the best on the water and set the bar for the rest of the fleet. We also believe the fishermen will have the Silver Bay Experience every time they interact with our company boats.
  • Professionalism: Silver Bay holds our captains to a very high standard and expectations. We believe that we hire the most capable and competent captains that hold safety and accountability to their highest standards. The captains must lead by example and set the culture for our vessels. This includes following the policies laid out in the employee handbook.

Education and Experience

  • Must have valid drivers license.
  • Marine Safety Drill Instructor - prepare your crew to effectively teach cold-water survival procedures, the use of marine safety equipment, and vessel safety drills.
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified
  • Must be an experienced as a Vessel Captain, Engineer, or have other Maritime and vessel knowledge.
  • A Ship or Boat Captain must have in-depth knowledge of cargo storage, vessel maintenance and navigation.
  • You must be proficient in any software on the vessel, able to use it day-to-day or in an emergency.

  • The Ship or Boat Captain must have strong management skills as the role is centered on the efficient coordination of crewmembers and the maintaining of a satisfied crew who are in line with company requirements. Team building and stress management traits.
  • To be successful, you must be organized and have a strong eye for detail, able to find any reason why the vessel may not be seaworthy, or any machinery would be dangerous, or to deal with any problems effectively in open sea.
  • Communications - Expresses ideas and thoughts in written form; selects and uses appropriate communication methods. Be able to use the on-board email and other forms of communication proficiently.
  • Must have excellent management skills, the ability to establish and build rapport with key industry personnel; firm understanding of providing excellence in internal customer service; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships on all levels.
  • Effectively resolve conflict; providing positive customer service; using tools as required for accomplishing the work.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must be able to climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs or vertical ladders both inside and outside in all weather conditions. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and depth perception. The employee is required to distinguish shades of color to identify abnormalities and/or defects in food products.
