TITLE: Substitute Camp Counselor DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation
CLASSIFICATION: Hourly (Non-Exempt) GRADE: Seasonal (June-August)
REPORTS TO: Camp Director AMENDED: January 2025
POSITION SUMMARY: This is a seasonal part-time position which assists with the leadership and supervision of camp participants in the C.A.M.P Silver Spring and Summer Playground programs. Substitutes will work between 0-40 hours in a week and float between C.A.M.P Silver Spring and Summer Playground. Each 8-week summer camp program runs June - August
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides supervision and mentorship of camp participants and volunteers.
- Assists camp directors in leading and participating in camp activities with campers.
- Maintains positive working relationships with the residents, local municipal officials, township staff, guest speakers and various community organizations.
- Ensures high quality activities, themes and specialty programs.
- Ensures a safe, caring and enjoyable environment that promotes positive child development.
- Effectively communicates with parents and camp participants, only in the absence of Camp Directors.
- Attends field trips, pool days, and assists with guest speakers.
- Follows camp objectives, rules, policies, and guidelines.
- Leads organized group and individual activities daily.
- Performs all other duties assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Experience, Education, Licenses/Certification
- Experience in supervising other people, including peers, is preferred.
- Experience in planning and leading camp programs and activities.
- Enrollment in high school; or a post-secondary institution is preferred.
- Acceptable criminal background check and child abuse clearance.
- Valid First Aid, CPR and AED certification.
General Knowledge/Abilities
- Ability to execute the policies and procedures of Silver Spring Township.
- Ability to plan, create, organize, and carry out daily programs.
- Positive and enthusiastic leadership style capable of motivating and mentoring camp participants.
- Implements positive behavioral management practices regarding staff and camp participants.
- Ability to fluently speak and read the English language along with understanding and following both written and verbal direction daily.
- Ability to function independently, have personal integrity, flexibility, and the ability to work effectively with the public and fellow employees daily.
- Ability to pull, push, move and/or transport fifteen (15) pounds daily.
Other
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Desire to interact with children.
