Singing River Health System Hospital (All 3 Locations) | Part-Time | Shift Varies
Position Overview:
These positions are participants in the MCQW Summer Externship program. The extern must complete 320 hours of required training from 27 May 2025 through 5 August 2025. The Nurse Extern provides fundamentals of nursing care (i.e.
personal and restorative care) to patients according to predefined guidelines,
a plan of care established by a Registered Nurse, and under the direct
supervision of the Registered Nurse staff.
Expectation is for all performed duties to be in accordance with
Singing River Health System procedures and policies, accreditation
organization, and governing guidance and publications for health care
employees.

Education:
Must be currently
enrolled in a NLN School of Nursing with 2nd Level completed. Must be accepted in the Mississippi Hospital
Association/MCQW Summer Student Externship program.
License:
N/A
Certification:
Must complete BCLS certification by the end of position
orientation.
Experience:
None.
Reports to:
RN responsible for patient care
management/patient care during a shift, Patient Care Coordinator, Patient Care
Manager, works directly with assigned Nurse Preceptor
Supervises:
None
Physical Demands:
Stands, turns, bends, stoops, lifts, climbs, and
uses many physical motions in performing day-to-day activities. Must be able
to stand for extended periods and do a great deal of walking without
experiencing undue fatigue. Potential exposure to communicable disease or
radiation.
Work involves being able to perceive the nature of
sounds at normal speaking levels, with or without correction. Must demonstrate the ability to
communicate, speak, and enunciate to express/exchange ideas and detailed information
in person and on the telephone. Work
requires a minimum standard of visual acuity, with or without correction,
with the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus, i.e.
shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor to forms that are closer to
compare data at close vision. Manual
dexterity of hands and feet to ambulate and adroitly manage multiple pieces
of equipment/tubes/invasive lines.
Must be able to be active for extended periods
without experiencing undue fatigue.
Must be able to work schedules assigned with the understanding that
changes may occur according to the needs of the hospital for off days, shifts
or weekends.
Mental Demands:
Must demonstrate keen mental
faculties/assessment and decision making abilities. Must demonstrate superior
communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in
person and by telephone. Must
demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. Must possess emotional stability conducive
to dealing with high stress levels.
Must demonstrate ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Attention to detail and the ability
to multi-task in complex situations is required. Must have the ability to maintain
collaborative and respectable working relationships throughout SRHS and other
organizations
Special Demands:
Must possess superior customer
service skills and professional etiquette.
Must possess proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer (must
be keyboard proficient) and other office technology (i.e., telephone, fax,
etc.). Must have intermediate
knowledge of MS Outlook and Word.
The Nurse Extern must be willing to
work on any unit with a similar skill set requirements for which the Nurse Extern
has developed competency
Must be accepted
in the Mississippi Hospital Association/MCQW Summer Student Externship
program. Requires availability for a
total of 320 hours during the approved externship program.
