POSITION SUMMARY: The Sterile Technician is responsible for decontaminating all dental and medical instruments and equipment. The Sterile Technician packages and wraps instruments prior to completing the sterilization process. Proper decontamination of dental and medical equipment, along with maintaining a clean, safe workplace, is vital for healthcare practices.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Sterilizes, disinfects, and decontaminates all dental and medical instruments according to infection control and Siskiyou Community Health Center (SCHC) protocols.
- Processes instruments, cassettes, and other dental equipment for sterilization.
- Distributes instruments to the medical department and dental and hygiene operatories.
- Correctly and efficiently operates sterilization machines.
- Performs biological and chemical wash solution testing and monitoring to ensure the quality and consistency of decontaminating instruments and dental equipment.
- Completes and maintains documentation and record keeping per SCHC protocol.
- Performs routine equipment maintenance and maintains stock of sterilization pouches, wraps, tape, indicator strips, and cleaning supplies in the workspace.
- Upholds a clean and safe working environment by complying with procedures, protocols, and regulations written and implemented by SCHC, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Association for Dental Safety (ADS), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, and EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification or ability to obtain upon hire.
- Sterilization experience preferred, not required.
- Can demonstrate practical verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively.
- Can demonstrate practical customer relations skills and the ability to work with diverse populations, often in stressful and fast-paced environments.
- Can demonstrate strong organizational skills and effective time use, working rapidly and managing multiple tasks.
PHYSICAN DEMANDS:
- Ability to stand for 4 hours.
- Lifting 20 lbs., bending, reaching, pushing, carrying, and sitting.
- Vision and hearing corrected to within normal range.
- Physical mobility within the clinic.
HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS:
- Exposure to blood and bodily fluids and aerosols containing infection disease and airborne pathogens.
- Exposure to and contact with sharp instruments contaminated with bodily fluids.
- Occasional patient interaction that could include hostile behavior.
Working conditions:
- Position is 100% clinic-based and is full-time, 5 days per week.
- Evening and occasional weekend work required.
- Ability and interest in expanding work beyond the sterilization process.
