Job Summary: The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Safety & Security Manager will direct the development, implementation and monitoring of an effective strategy to mitigate safety/security risk, maintain continuity of operations, and provide for the safety and security of all sisters, staff, and visitors in variety of settings across the organization. This person shall also serve as the subject matter expert on all safety and security-related matters and serve on the Institute’s Incident Command Team. Responsible for establishing policies and standards affecting safety and security of staff members, this person will collaborate with multiple stakeholders including Health & Wellness, Human Resources, Information Technology and Real Estate & Facilities. The Safety & Security Manager will ensure security protocols and mechanisms are in place to address the unique security challenges faced by residential convents, care settings, retreat centers, vacation homes, and offices; this position will collaborate with schools and ministries located on Mercy property. This position provides direction and technical support in developing and maintaining consistent programs for preventative tactics such as drills and incident reporting platforms, procedures around response to specific threats, education and access for all campus occupants, video surveillance systems, badge access controls, and vendor management profiles. This position will manage specific threats from a system perspective in collaboration with local leadership. This position will require travel within the United States.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Serve as the primary focal point for safety and security for all sites, including:

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant safety laws and standards.

Program Development and Implementation:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain standardized safety and security policies and procedures (i.e., Lockout-tagout, respiratory protection, mobile equipment, etc.).
  • Develop and update standardized security plans, business continuity plans, crisis management plans, policies and procedures in accordance with best practices and ensure their implementation.
  • Conduct standardized risk assessments and establish safety protocols to mitigate hazards and prevent injuries.
  • Develops badge system for all staff, visitors, and vendors; implements plan.

Training and Education:

  • Conduct training needs assessment with key stakeholders resulting in increased safety, security and risk management capacity;
  • Develop and facilitate security and safety training for multi-use campuses, care centers and office spaces for employees at all levels;
  • Promote a culture of safety through ongoing education and awareness initiatives.

Incident Investigation, Management, and Reporting:

  • Lead investigations of accidents, incidents, and near misses; security issues, and claims.
  • Manages active threats on behalf of the system in collaboration with local leadership.
  • Prepare and submit necessary reports and documentation to regulatory agencies.
  • Track all incidents, accidents, and near misses and perform analysis to determine trends and actions to address.
  • Ensure collection of documentation for insurance or reimbursement claims.
  • Collaborates with SMA insurance functions.

Auditing and Monitoring:

  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to identify and correct unsafe behaviors and conditions and identify areas for improvement.
  • Leads by example in preventative safety activities such as submitting near misses, behavior-based safety (BBS) observations, and coaching others to identify and report hazards
  • Provide recommendations for improving safety in the workplace environment.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Provide advice and counsel to various stakeholders on matters relating to personal and property safety and security;
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to promote best practices.
  • Communicate safety policies and procedures clearly and effectively.

Develop and lead the Safety Committee and train others in the organization to be contributing members of the safety committee.

  • Collaborate with Cyber Security parties including internal Information Technology team and vendor partners to create security and access studies with recommendations on risk mitigation, including training of site staff and sisters with documentation debriefing.
  • Actively work with insurance and risk carriers for the organization on liability reduction, safety prioritization and security enhancement.
  • Participate in onboarding sessions for new employees on education around safety and security, including certification on annual basis for relevant departments including dietary, housekeeping, facilities and groundskeeping.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures.
  • Lead incident command center response.
  • Conduct drills and training to prepare employees for emergency situations.
  • Monitor security conditions and liaise and coordinate with external agencies as well as functional internal parties.
  • Provide updates for stakeholders and communications process.

Environmental Compliance:

  • Familiar with EPA and State environmental requirements (DEP) requirements for air, water and waste.
  • Assists the Regional Directors in gathering needed information for required reports
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
  • No direct management responsibility but will serve in consultation with leaders and managers throughout the organization.

Travel

50% travel may be required, continental US

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Competencies and Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Criminal Justice, Security Administration or related area, or ability to demonstrate a work-based equivalent
  • Preferred security, military, law enforcement, or legal background
  • Minimum of 9 years implementing security programs and a strong knowledge of security management in complex environments
  • Experience conducting training for small groups
  • Demonstrated understanding of complex emergencies, related security concerns and appropriate responses to such emergencies
  • Exceptional communication skills for explaining complex security concerns, policies, protocols, and procedures to sisters, leadership, employees, vendors, etc
  • Written and spoken fluency in English required; second language a plus
  • Willingness to travel as required

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $90,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
