What are we looking for?
We want to add a Residential Counselor (RC) to our team at our newest location in Ithaca, NY. As the RC, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety of our residents, one of our organization's top priorities.
We are looking for someone who loves and is passionate about people and supports SJCS's mission and vision.
Your overall essential responsibilities will be the following :
- Prioritizing best practices in person-centered care concerning each resident’s individual dignity and integrity, including their unique goals.
- Taking care of and ensuring that our residents are safe and taken care of.
- Provide orderliness, cleanliness, and structure to the program’s day-to-day operations.
- Developing, fostering, and maintaining positive, collaborative relationships with residents, their families, and the SJCS team

- Knowledge of legal and ethical mandates of maintaining patient confidentiality to adhere to the highest ethical standards and best practices in residential care.
- Knowledge of the utilization of technological tools for timely and accurate documentation.
- Knowledge of substance use treatment, recovery culture, concerns, issues, and trends.
- Knowledge of mental health first aid and principles of de-escalation techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal communication, verbal and written.
Extra credit will be given if you have the following experience, education, and requirements :
- High School diploma or equivalent (required).
- One or more years of relevant experience (required).
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in human services or related field (desired).
- CRPA or working toward a CRPA certification (desired).
- CASAC or working towards CASAC certification (desired).
All SJCS employees must :
- Obtain a valid health certificate to meet current funding authority requirements as required.
- Having a valid state-issued driver’s license with a current driving record in good standing is required.
- Meet SJCS and the funding authority requirement of criminal background and record checks.
Physical and environmental conditions include :
- Work requires no unusual demand for physical effort except the normal risks or discomforts, requiring special safety precautions for operating a motor vehicle.
- Exposure to aggressive human behavior.
- Some travel less than 10%.
The hourly range for this position is $20-$21 per hour, depending on experience.
