Job Summary
The Trauma Coordinator is responsible for coordinating trauma education for all members of the Trauma Team. Remains knowledgeable of all aspects of the Washington State Trauma System and implements them at Skagit Regional Health. Follows up on trauma patients to ensure state criteria for care is met and that all avenues for reimbursement are utilized.
Essential Functions
Conducts concurrent trauma patient identification and chart review. Analyzes, interprets, and evaluates trauma criteria as it applies to emergency department’s hospital admissions. Assists with the completion of required Trauma applications for accreditation. Coordinates quarterly Trauma Committee meetings.
Identifies utilization and quality variations and relates them to potential risk management issues and refers them to the appropriate individual(s) in a timely manner. Accesses and assists with the safety reporting system to review and assist with applicable events. Initiates Quality Improvement initiatives and coordinates chart reviews. Assists in the chart review process, develops training and education to assist with proactive risk management. Collaborates with the discharge planner and care management team to facilitate a discharge plan which achieves desired patient outcomes and satisfaction. Serves as a liaison with EMS for trauma care coordination. Conducts case reviews and case presentation of Trauma Committee meetings.
Assists in reviewing, revising and developing clinical procedures, programs and guidelines. Remains current with present procedures which assures quality care and effective utilization of hospital services.
Demonstrates leadership abilities when collaborating with health care team. Communicates clearly with staff regarding issues of utilization, quality and risk management. Effectively utilizes and analyzes feedback from team to improve group processes. Collaborates with Critical Care CNS to provide trauma education for ICCU staff. Collects and inputs required data in Washington State Trauma Registry. Submits required reports in a timely manner. Coordinates data collection, data entry and data submission as directed by the DOH Trauma Registry. Represents Skagit Regional Health at Regional and State Trauma Meetings. Participates in Trauma QA meetings as required to maintain regulatory compliance. Assures compliance to Trauma WACs.
Assists Leadership in the clinical evaluation of nursing staff and assists with goal setting, training/education as needed. Identifies and coordinates annual skills training and age specific requirements in relation to trauma.
Maintains Emergency Department clinical knowledge to include technical, prioritization and delegation skills. Supports continuum of care concepts. Monitor Trauma Grant programs and submit necessary information to secure grants. Assists with grant writing, proactively utilizing resources to obtain support through various programs. Accurately prepares and submits in a timely manner Trauma Center designation application. Provides community educational opportunities as required. Develops and maintains trauma related policies and procedures. Collaborate with Case Management and Finance office to identify patients qualifying for enhanced reimbursement. Submit required information to hospital and physician billing departments.
Complies with all SRH policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned by Director or Designee.
Collaborates with Trauma Program Manager preparing and maintaining trauma designation across the region.
Education
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN or bachelor’s degree in related field preferred. Working knowledge and understanding of current health care review systems. TNCC Instructor preferred. Working knowledge of the WA State Trauma Registry.
Experience/Training
Two (2) years current practical experience in quality improvement and medical staff peer review preferred. Minimum two (2) years clinical experience in emergency nursing. Collector Data Registry entry and report writing experience preferred.
License/Certifications
Current Washington state RN license, and AHA (American Heart Association) BLS, ACLS, PALS and TNCC is required. ENPC is required one time, otherwise must obtain ENPC within 12months of hire. After that appropriate continuing trauma education per subsection 27 of WAC 246-976-700 (Trauma Services Standards).
