What are the responsibilities and job description for the Campus Safety Officer position at Skidmore College?
Skidmore is accepting applications for a full time (80 hours bi-weekly) Campus Safety Officer position for NYS certified Security Guard. Responsibilities include security patrol and dispatching for the Skidmore College campus including all buildings and college-owned properties as well as enforce the rules and regulations of the College. The position requires the successful candidate be flexible with regards to scheduling demands.
- Conducts routine patrol duties throughout the campus performing various lock/unlock assignments, answering non-emergency calls for service, investigating accidents and incidents, rendering first-aid, conducting security assessments and crime prevention initiatives, and community engagement. While on patrol, identifies potential safety risks such as parking violations, unlocked doors, or damaged safety equipment, and work to correct them.
- Responds to emergency events by quickly assessing the situation, contacting the necessary resources to address the problem, keeping community members safe and informed, and properly documenting the event and steps taken to remediate it in a clear concise written report.
- Generates accurate incident reports using Computer Aided Dispatch and report writing software.
- De-escalates potentially volatile situations and enlists additional support as needed.
- Delivers training and education programs to stakeholder groups.
- Performs desk duties, which include, but are not limited to, providing customer service to “walk in” visitors, responding to and monitoring radio transmission, and triaging/assessing the importance of incident information that must be communicated to stakeholders in a timely manner.
- Functions both as NYS licensed Security Guards and as Campus Security Authorities, defined within the Clery Act (34 CFR 688.46a). Generates timely warnings and crime alerts in accordance with department policy.
- Tracks and documents items of value e.g. lost and found in accordance with departmental and college guidelines.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by leadership.
Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent, a current NYS Security Guard license or be able to obtain and maintain a NYS Security Guard license (or meet law enforcement requirements for an exemption) within 30 days of employment at Skidmore.
Skills and experience: Candidate must be able to work with computer software programs such as Word and other applications. Must be able to perform patrol functions. Candidate may be required to become trained as a NYS certified EMT.
The ability to conduct investigations and deal effectively with a diverse community in a service-oriented department is a must. Good communication skills and writing ability are necessary. Having a working knowledge of the NYS Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, and other NYS laws is desired. Prior law enforcement experience is preferred.
Pay Rate: $20.00 - $20.50 commensurate with experience.
