Position Overview :

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory¿s Facilities and Operations (F&O) Division manages one of the world¿s premier science facilities on a 400-acre Stanford site with 150 structures for the Department of Energy. We are a service organization committed to the support and success of the Laboratory's Scientific Mission by providing safe and responsive engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance of equipment, buildings, and infrastructure.

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Facilities and Operations Mechanical Engineering team. In this position, you will provide mechanical engineering design and review related to SLAC¿s facilities and mechanical infrastructure systems. Examples of projects include design & modification, construction support, and operation and maintenance of campus mechanical infrastructural systems including RO / DI / Ultra-pure water, process cooling, CDA, compressed gases, toxics, waste treatment, sanitary sewer, storm drain, domestic water, lab waste, and fire protection systems. Tasks may include performing engineering calculations, selecting equipment; operations and maintenance procedures, system modeling, configuration management, and condition assessment; reviewing and commenting on mechanical process piping and plumbing drawings, design guidelines, and specification packages as a subject matter expert for plumbing / process piping, and fire protection as needed.

This position is an employee of Stanford University, providing support to the Department of Energy (DOE) contract at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. This position reports to the F&O Mechanical Engineering Manager.

Note : SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park; CA.

Your specific responsibilities include :

Serve as the technical expert in the performance of facilities engineering responsibilities involving the planning, design, construction, modification, operation, maintenance, and utilities servicing of campus facilities.

Serve as an expert, providing design and technical recommendations in area(s) of specialization. May include development and implementation of programs and systems, and interfacing and coordination with / across specialties and disciplines.

Identify and resolve complex technical systems issues that may have high visibility and / or high risk / consequences of failure.

Serve on major, ongoing, technically complex projects requiring substantial coordination and interface with senior management.

Prepare, review, and analyze projects' scope of work, developing design criteria, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and sequence of operations for sound design, conformance with design guidelines and other related criteria, and pertinent codes or standards.

Serve as a technical SME on projects in area(s) of expertise across multiple disciplines, and / or contractor activities, through all project phases.

Other duties may also be assigned.

To be successful in this position you will bring :

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience with design, modification, installation, and commissioning of mechanical infrastructure systems including process utilities and plumbing systems.

Familiar with California Building and Energy Codes, NFPA Codes, ASME, ANSI, water and air quality, and wastewater discharge regulations.

Experience working on complex engineering projects.

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative relationships inside and outside the organization.

Self-starter and a team player with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Proficiency with standard desktop applications for word processing, Smartsheets, Bluebeam, and presentations.

Proactive, data-driven analysis and planning.

Knowledge and proficiency with mechanical engineering software related to assignments.

Demonstrate the highest level of customer / client service and response.

Demonstrate a flexible and open-minded approach to issues and is innovative in stepping outside standard operating procedures to deliver the best solution to customer demands.

Understanding and ability to perform / evaluate lifecycle cost analysis.

In addition, preferred requirements include :

Advanced degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline is a plus.

Experience with low-conductivity water systems design and operation.

The expected pay range for this position is $117,526 - $140,838 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory / Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
