This position will work on a wide range of Maine and New England based transportation engineering projects, as well as be responsible for planning, design, permitting, analysis, and preparation of specifications and technical reports as well as construction inspections as needed.
During design they may assist with preliminary design, utility coordination and investigation, project estimates, preparation of specifications and contract documents and final design. During construction inspection they will oversee construction activities, coordinate and test materials being incorporated into the work, physically measure quantities of production, assist in preparing spreadsheets and letters associated with change orders, meeting summaries, and revised design sketches.
Typical projects include highway design, complete streets, parks, greenways, sidewalks, watermains, sanitary sewers, pump stations, storm water facilities, bridge and utility structure

- SLR offers internships to help students get practical work experience in their chosen field. The internship is a temporary seasonal position typically offered during the summer and winter months
- The hourly range for this position is $22.00- $24.00. Final agreed upon compensation will be commensurate with individual education, professional designation, experience, internal parity, and location
- This is a non-benefits eligible position
Responsibilities:
- Provide Inspector services for MDOT Construction Inspection Projects
- Conduct measurements and documentation of construction activities to ensure compliance with contract documents
- Perform basic material testing activities and supply results for internal and external purposes. Testing may include Hot Mix Asphalt, Portland Cement Concrete and soils/aggregates
- Coordinate with clients and contractors
- Prepare records for oversight of construction projects including daily inspection reports, and prepare/upload to the MDOT system for record keeping
- Attend project meetings and prepare written meeting summaries
- Develop and maintain project records throughout construction
- Assist in the preparation of pay requisitions and change orders
- Prepare project correspondence
- Coordinate with utility companies and various agencies of the industry as necessary
- Work may involve working nights, weekends and holidays
- Working beyond eight hours per day and beyond 40 hours per week may be required
- Pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Transportation Engineering
- 0-2 years of experience in engineering, site development design or construction
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite of software
- Ability to be organized while working on multiple tasks on projects of varying types
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to drive to and from job sites
- Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical and judgment capabilities
- Demonstrated ability to organize and manage work
- Demonstrated ability to follow direction and work in a team environment
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
- Understanding of budgets and deadlines
- Self-motivated, requiring limited oversight on common tasks
- Pro-active in seeking work tasks
