Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Technician

The Opportunity:

Our projects range from building erection reviews, fabrication shop audits, condition assessments, repair and reinforcement monitoring, to maintenance and warranty reviews for existing roadway structures and bridges. We also have a wide assortment of clients, but our primary focus areas are building (D1.1) and DOT (D1.1 or D1.5) code related. Depending on the project, your position could include a range of work activities. Work opportunities would include, but may not be limited to, daily site visits to local jobsites, assessing highway structures throughout the state, assisting with materials testing on sites or within in one of our laboratories, or occasional options to travel to perform evaluations and testing at project sites or within manufacturing or fabrication facilities in other states.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform bolted and welded structural connection reviews on building constructions sites, fabrication shop inspections, and additional specialty review and non-destructive testing.
  • Perform NDT of welds, structural members, ancillary structures, or various parts and components. Common NDT methods include ultrasonic testing (UT) and magnetic-particle testing (MT), with less frequent dye-penetrant testing (PT).
  • Field witnessing, sample collection and lab testing as needed, including testing of welder performance and procedure qualifications, high strength bolts and anchor rods, load testing of assemblies, etc.
  • Occasionally assisting with other service reviews or testing, as needed, to support other groups within SME.

Requirements:

  • A current American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
  • Quality Control (QC) or Quality Assurance (QA) related NDT experience with one or more current ASNT SNT-TC-1A, Level II certification for UT, MT, and/or PT; or relevant NDT training log documentation that would qualify for pursuing examination and certification in these methods.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Proficient with commonly used computer programs and phone apps (e.g. Microsoft word/excel, PDFs, email, web browsers, maps, etc.).
  • Ability to handle physical demands, such as lifting and carrying equipment (up to 50lbs repetitively), regularly wearing specialty Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for extended periods of time (e.g. full-face respirator, coveralls, harnesses, unique gloves/boots, etc.), walking on uneven ground frequently, working in various weather conditions including hot and cold environments, and traveling to different locations.
  • Able to work comfortably and confidently in unique work settings. Depending on the project, you will be expected to work from heights (e.g. ladders, scaffolding, platforms, arial lifts, swing stages, exposed floor levels or roofs for tall buildings or other structures, etc.) in adherence to required fall-arrest/restraint safety protocols. Additionally, some projects may require you to work within confined spaces (e.g. tanks, vaults, tunnels, trenches, etc.) as defined by, and in accordance with the requirements of, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
  • Travel to sites throughout the state, with consideration given to assigning you to projects close to your base office, and occasional travel to sites in other states. Occasional overtime, weekend work, and out-of- town, overnight travel will also be required to meet our clients’ needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills to effectively interact with clients, team members, and supervisors, conveying technical information clearly, concisely and in a professional manner.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, manage workloads, maintain accurate and detailed record-keeping skills, documenting field observations, safety concerns, and problem resolutions.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to build rapport with clients and team members, fostering positive working relationships, customer-centric approach to provide excellent service to clients, ensuring their needs and concerns are addressed promptly and professionally.
  • Able to understand and adapt to change and react productively to frequent interruptions and changing conditions.
  • Has a general aptitude for identifying and resolving complex technical problems in the field, utilizing critical thinking and logical reasoning.
  • Demonstrates ethical conduct, maintaining confidentiality and ensuring safety and security in all aspects of work, strict adherence to safety protocols and guidelines, fostering a safe working environment for yourself and others.

Additional Considerations:

  • DOT D1.5 code related fabrication inspection experience preferred, but not required.
  • Basic construction competencies including ability to determine location from surface features and landmarks by interpretation from surveys, road maps, aerial photos, topographic maps, and geologic maps; understanding construction stakes set by others, and color markings of utility companies; or general knowledge of construction activities, inspection, or testing preferred, but not required.
