The San Franciscooffice of SmithGroupis looking for aCalifornia High-Speed Rail (HSR) Authority Station Delivery Design Integration Managerto join our team.

Leadership opportunity on one of the largest ongoing mega-projects in the country. Individual needs to be an Architect, ideally licensed to practice in California or willing to get licensed, with over 15 years of professional experience including managing large projects program management with a multitude of stakeholders. Experience in transit projects and/or large infrastructure projects is a plus.

Project:

The California High-Speed Rail Authority (Authority) is responsible for planning, designing, building, and operating the first high-speed rail system in the nation. The high-speed rail system will connect the mega-regions of the State, contribute to economic development and a cleaner environment, create jobs, and preserve agricultural and protected lands. When it is completed, trains will run from San Francisco to the Los Angeles basin capable of speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour using sustainable electric power. The high-speed rail system will eventually extend to Sacramento and San Diego, totaling 800 miles with up to 24 stations. In addition, the Authority is working with regional partners to implement a State-wide rail modernization plan that will invest billions of dollars in local and regional rail lines to meet the State's 21st century transportation needs. As part of this work the Authority is building or coordinating on the building of 24 state of the art multi-modal stations. SmithGroup has been awarded the contract for Station Delivery Support and Technical Planning Services.

Role of Design Integration Manager:

The Design Integration Manager will act as the Authority's representative to provide design technical oversight/ feedback to the Station Delivery team of Foster Arup JV and ensure design integration of 4 stations in the central valley with the mainline track work, early train operators, and sustainability teams to meet the Authority's goal of revenue generating operation by the end of 2030 in the Central Valley. Additionally, they will support the Authority's interests in the design of 12 other stations being built with partner agencies across California, and to protect the Authority's interests, goals, code compliance and design criteria established for the station designs. They will play an important role in the SmithGroup leadership team managing the High-Speed Rail Project and coordinate with transportation, planning, policy, and real estate work being performed by the team. This position will be supported by a process manager.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Primary roles are providing transit station design and technical input on the HSR station designs and supporting the Authority regarding managing the CV Station Design Team (Foster ARUP JV) and process. Develop and manage positive client relationships and work as the client's advocate by identifying and balancing client expectations within the context of contractual obligations, client and SG goals.
  • Ability to develop, maintain and strengthen partnerships with various stakeholders through collaboration is critical.
  • Manage project communiques, delivery, and deliverables to ensure the highest quality of documentation and professionalism.
  • Advanced ability to understand and convey complex information effectively through written, verbal, and visual means to various stakeholders is a must.
  • Provide leadership and management necessary to strategize successful scope delivery, financial performance, and risk mitigation.
  • Communicate with all project participants, internal staff, consultants, clients, owners, contractors, and jurisdictions in an effective and collaborative manner.
  • Develop, define, and maintain project schedule to meet contractual obligations.
  • Provide supervision of the multi-disciplinary project staff assuring the technical, administrative and schedule targets are met within the framework of corporate policy and in accordance with applicable professional and industry standards.
  • Ensuring designs are contextual and reflect their local context and meet a high standard of international design excellence.

Support activities:

  • Participate in a variety of coordination meetings with Authority, mainline engineering firms and contractors, station designers, public agencies, railroads and transit providers, early train operator and sustainability team.
  • Develop agendas, presentations, and meeting minutes, set up and run meetings as needed.
  • Evaluate quality, completeness, and consistency of design team's drawings by providing comments and edits on technical drawings and design documents.
  • Manage the Design Criteria Manual, including edits and updates.
  • Coordinate with the Authority Planning & Sustainability and Strategic Communications Office to collaborate with local stakeholders on station delivery.
  • Support HSRA staff in the development of presentations to leadership
  • Contribute to monthly, quarterly, and annual progress reports.
  • Work with SmithGroup Planning Team on station integration with local planning efforts and urban design guidelines.
  • Manage RFI process

Duration & Geographic location:

SmithGroup's contract is for a minimum of three years, with a possible extension of two years. Individuals can be located anywhere in the US, but meetings are scheduled in the pacific time zone. This position is anticipated to be full time and may transition to time over the life of the project.Some travel will be required but most meetings will be virtual.

SmithGroup offers competitive compensation and an excellent benefit package. The anticipated salary range for this position is $148,000 to $185,000 annually, at the time of posting. We may ultimately pay more less than the anticipated salary range for this position. Additionally, an employee in this position is eligible for a performance-based bonus on an annual basis. Our comprehensive benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, flexible spending account options and voluntary insurances. We offer 3 weeks of paid time off within the first year of employment, with the option of purchasing additional time off, 8 paid federal holidays, and parental leave benefits.
