Detention Officer I & II

Uncertified Detention Officer I start at $46,698 ($22.45/hour).

Upon completion of working test and Basic Jailer certification, pay will increase to DOII (Certified) $49,170 ($23.64/hour).

Certified Detention Officers with 1 year of experience and who possess the POST Basic Jailer certification start at Detention Officer II at $49,170 ($23.64/hour).

The pay for Certified Detention Officers with MORE THAN 1 year of experience and POST Basic Jailer certification will be based on experience and qualifications.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for the control and security of inmates in the Smyrna City Jail.

MAJOR DUTIES

• Books and processes inmates into the jail; processes inmate releases; collects fingerprint information and submits information to state agencies; coordinates intake, booking, housing, release, and bonding procedures.
• Ensures the proper housing classification of inmates.
• Commands and controls inmate movement inside and outside the facility.
• Inspects the conditions of locks, windows, grills, doors, and gates at the jail facility.
• Operates control room equipment as assigned to manage the locking and unlocking of doors.
• Guards facility entrances and screen visitors.
• Participates in the provision of meals, medications, mail, and commissary items to inmates.
• Manages and monitors inmate activities in cell blocks, recreation yards, and other areas.
• Inspects inmate mail for contraband.
• Searches inmates and cells for weapons, drugs, and other contraband.
• Conducts fire, safety, and sanitation inspections.
• Conducts roll call and head counts.
• Records and maintains inmate records.
• Prepares required reports, including incident reports.
• Documents inmate movement.
• Responds to complaints and comments related to jail operations; mediates disputes; initiates problem resolution.
• Assists in the maintenance of jail supply inventories and in the maintenance of assigned facilities.
• Appears in court to testify on cases or reports as required.
• Transports inmates to and from court, medical appointments, and other appointments.
• Performs related duties.

• Knowledge of jail policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of Georgia laws and regulations governing jail operations.
• Knowledge of the constitutional rights of inmates.
• Knowledge of emergency operations procedures.
• Knowledge of CPR and basic first aid.
• Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
• Skill in the use of communications equipment, and other standard and specialized equipment.
• Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
• Skill in the supervision of inmates.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Jail Sergeant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include related state and federal laws, city policies and procedures, and jail policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of related detention officer duties. The necessity of responding to potentially dangerous situations contributes to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to participate in the management and security of inmates at the city jail. Successful performance helps ensure the safety and security of inmates, personnel, and visitors.

• Contacts are typically with co-workers, judges, probation officers, parole officers, representatives of other law enforcement or correctional agencies, inmates, family members, attorneys, clergy, and members of the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts heavy objects, climbs ladders, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• The work is typically performed in an office and in a detention facility. The work requires the use of specialized equipment and protective devices.
  
  

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Must have a valid Georgia Driver's License.
• Completion of 80-Hour Basic Jail Officer Course required.
• Successfully pass extensive background and driver's history checks.
• Successfully pass post-offer psychological and medical evaluations and drug screen.
