We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Engineering to join our team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our snack manufacturing operations.
General Description
The Director of Engineering will be the company’s engineering leader and will be responsible for managing the engineering team and activities. This includes development and management of all capital projects, asset management, and environmental/regulatory compliance for the company. The position is also responsible for providing technical support/assistance to the plants’ maintenance function as needed and lead continuous improvement within the operations function.
Position Requirements:
Engineering Degree
5 years Maintenance/Engineering experience
Previous Leadership of Engineering function and capital project management
Direct Management experience
Must possess strong leadership skills and technical competance
Previous food manufacturing experience
Computer Literacy- Computerized PM Program, CAD (preferred), Word, Excel
Environmental/Regulatory experience preferred
Physical capability to walk, climb ladders, lift up to 50 pounds
Travel- Approximate 25% travel. Frequency and duration can vary based on activity as travel could be 100% during significant project activity.
Position Responsibilities:
Plans engineering projects by determining specifications; selecting contractors; establishing installation schedules; planning shut-downs and installations; integrating requirements with architectural and mechanical designs; verifying code requirements; updating cost estimates.
Completes projects by supervising installations; resolving design issues.
Manages the actual expenses of each project versus the forecasted expenses.
Develops engineering operational objectives by contributing engineering information and recommendations to strategic plans and reviews; preparing and completing action plans; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving problems; completing audits; identifying trends; determining administrative system improvements; implementing change.
Develops strategic Capital plans by studying operational plans; studying existing conditions; determining needs to accomplish operational plans; mapping solutions; updating and modifying requirements and solutions; preparing cost estimates and budgets. The outcome of this activity is a rolling 3 year Capital plan for each location which outlines projects, project cost, and expected savings.
Meets engineering financial objectives by forecasting engineering requirements; preparing an annual expense budget; scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
Directly leads and manages the engineering team including recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; planning and reviewing compensation actions; enforcing policies and procedures.
Develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed within the engineering department and by selected contractors.
Supports plant operations following project implementation by establishing effective training procedures supporting the development of preventive and on-going maintenance, and testing programs; scheduling repairs; coordinating shut-downs and installations.
Ensure environmental/regulatory compliance with OSHA, IEPA/AQMD, Sanitation District, Fire Department, and other agencies. This responsibility includes monitoring data and reporting as required, facilitating all plant visits with regulatory agencies, etc.
Evaluate plant utility (including gas, electricity, compressed air, and water) usage and determine reduction opportunities.
Manage the plants fixed assets including asset inventory, proper asset valuation, and identification.
Maintains safe and healthy work environment by establishing, following, and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with codes and legal regulations.
Updates job knowledge by remaining current on codes and requirements; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
Leads the company’s sustainability initiatives. This involves leading a cross-functional team to develop goals, plans and implement actions to achieve compliance with sustainability requirements.
Partners with the Plant Maintenance teams in each plant to evaluate Maintenance Downtime root causes and lead equipment/process modification to improve reliability.
Support the Maintenance team in technical trouble-shooting.
Evaluate the Operation to identify performance opportunities and establish corrective actions as part of our ongoing continuous improvement strategy. This includes equipment and process modifications or replacement, implementation of automation, and process controls.
