Park and Job Description
This recruitment will be used to fill one seasonal position, to begin mid-February and last through early June (potential for extension after evaluation).
Snow Canyon State Park is situated on the edge of the greater St. George area, making it an easy drive for dozens of elementary schools in the region. With this ease of access, a high level of biodiversity, and extraordinary geological formations, the park is a fantastic outdoor classroom for area youth. Last year alone, over 1,200 elementary school children visited the park on Ranger-guided field trips.
The person hired for this position will support this function by working directly with the Park Naturalist in the park’s education program. They will spend most of their time guiding hikes and presenting lessons for local elementary school groups. The lessons will support Utah SEEd and core curriculum standards and use teaching strategies best suited to each age range. As a secondary responsibility, the Park Ranger Aide will guide interpretive hikes for the general public; have the opportunity to develop programs that educate visitors about the park; and assist at the visitor center desk and other education programs and events.
Duties:
- Education: Teach core-curriculum and age-specific outdoor education lessons, guide hikes for children grades k - 12, and educate students on basic outdoor recreation concepts such as Leave No Trace principles.
- Interpretation: Develop and deliver formal programs and guided hikes; assist with social media posts; trailing roving; and assist the Park Naturalist during other public programs and events
- Visitor Center: Provide information for visitors at the visitor center desk; handle retail sales; and register incoming campers.
- Other projects as assigned
Skills:
Ability to interact and communicate with park visitors including children. Ability to work well with other staff members and volunteers. Comfortable with public speaking and working with large groups. Comfortable with computers and data entry including Excel, Word, and other data processing programs. Strong writing and organizational skills.
Requirements:
- Applicant must be willing to work 4 - 5 days per week, including holidays. Some weekends and evenings may be required.
- Working conditions will require hiking up to 3-miles roundtrip; long periods of standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting, or similar activities. Conditions also include working in a remote, outdoor desert setting with exposure to variable weather conditions including heat, cold, sun, wind, and rain.
- Applicant must be 18-years or older
- A valid driver's license is required.

- Ability to operate vehicles, off-highway vehicles, or golf carts
- Required state and agency training: Defensive driving, security awareness, PCI security awareness, workplace harassment, and abusive conduct prevention training, etc. within the first weeks of employment.
