Job Description :
The Setnor School of Music, within the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University, invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor of Music Theory. This is a three-year appointment starting on August 18, 2025, with the possibility of renewal based on exceptional performance and institutional need.
We seek an accomplished musician with expertise teaching music theory who is gaining national or international recognition through their ongoing creative and scholarly work. Experience teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses in music theory, ear training, and analysis is required. The ability to teach jazz theory and arranging, although not required, would be highly valued.
An approach to teaching and learning that demonstrates a commitment to diversity and inclusion is required. We seek a candidate committed to advancing a holistic, continually evolving lexicon of music.

- Terminal degree (PhD or DMA) required
- Previous college teaching experience
Job Specific Qualifications :
Responsibilities :
Teaching undergraduate courses in theory and ear-training, advising master's theses, and applied instruction based on the candidate's areas of expertise. Candidates will be expected to teach upper-level coursework in at least two of the following areas : electroacoustic media / interactive software, counterpoint, orchestration, contemporary analysis, and performance / arranging / improvisation.
Serve on committees in the Department / School, College, and University. This may include recruitment, program development, community outreach, student advising, mentoring of student organizations, and participating in accreditation- and assessment-related activities.
