What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director Strategic Growth and Business Development position at SOCIETY OF MANUFACTURING ENGINEERS?
Responsible for leading SME’s Strategic Growth and Business Development activities, driving the creation and implementation of strategic actions that align with SME’s Mission, Vision, and Purpose. Leveraging market-driven insights, identifies and executes growth opportunities, including mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic partnerships, and the development of new products and services. This position collaborates organization-wide to lead research and insights initiatives, delivering actionable recommendations that enhance SME’s growth, impact, and long-term sustainability.
MAJOR FUNCTIONS:
- Lead SME’s strategy planning process, ensuring alignment with its Mission, Vision, and Purpose.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director/CEO and Chief Financial and Strategy Officer to evolve and refresh SME’s annual strategic plan.
- Work cross-functionally to align strategic action plans across business units and engage action owners in developing and tracking execution plans.
- Facilitate the SME Executive Team in establishing and implementing KPIs for the strategic plan.
- Deliver market-driven research and insights to identify and inform future growth opportunities.
- Leverage internal and external industry data to support strategic initiatives.
- Assess priority markets for new business opportunities that may be SME-wide or specific to individual business units.
- Collaborate with business units to execute key projects requiring market research and insights, and deliver actionable, market-led recommendations for growth.
- Conduct research and analysis for potential acquisitions, equity investments, joint ventures, alliances, licensing relationships, or divestiture opportunities.
- Coordinate M&A/JV processes with external advisors, internal stakeholders, and potential targets, while leading post-acquisition integration into SME’s processes and culture.
- Monitor government spending priorities to identify funding opportunities for manufacturing technologies, industrial sectors, and workforce development.
- Develop strategies to secure new sources of government and private sector funding, augmenting SME’s current programs and research efforts.
- Identify underfunded or inadequately resourced activities within SME and align them with growth opportunities, building synergies and integration plans to maximize impact.
- Research and foster relationships with potential strategic partners, alliances, and collaborators to advance SME’s Mission, Vision, and Purpose.
- Facilitate collaboration among staff and volunteer stakeholders to develop actionable and executable plans.
- Build and lead a high-performing team by recruiting, managing, and developing talent. Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement while ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Establish clear expectations and provide regular feedback, coaching, and development opportunities to maximize team members' potential and support long-term retention.
- Partner with leaders across departments to align team efforts with organizational objectives and drive impactful, cross-functional initiatives.
