Job Description
The Viral Hepatitis (VH) Program within the Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness (CEDEP) division of the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) is currently hiring for an Epidemiologist 2 position. This is a contract position that currently requires 5 inoffice days per month.
Job duties will include :
- Serving as the data manager for CDCs Surveillance for Emerging Threats to Mothers and Babies Network (SETNET) grant.
- Providing quality assurance for SETNET data entered into a REDCap specific project.
- Transmitting SETNET data to CDC per protocol.
- Developing data visualizations for internal and external partners.
- Serving as the data liaison between TDH and CDC.
- Supervising a Medical Records Abstractor as well as a Data Entry Specialist.
- Requesting and maintaining access to electronic health records throughout Tennessee.
- Conducting surveillance on hepatitis C syphilis and other emerging health threats on pregnant people and their infants.
- Participating in grantrelated conference calls meetings and site visits.
- Conducting data analysis as needed for grant related meetings trainings / technical assistance requests and grant deliverables.
- Assisting with viral hepatitis surveillance data entry and / or medical record requests as needed.
- Participating in grant development writing administration and monitoring to ensure compliance with grant requirements.
- Participating in development of the annual Viral Hepatitis Epidemiological Profile.
- Assisting with the end of the year data validation and closeout as requested.
- Responding to internal and external viral hepatitis inquiries as assigned.
- Developing detailed procedural guides for all assigned tasks.
- Additional tasks as assigned.
- Knowledge of viral hepatitis and maternal / child health
- Supervisory experience
- Experience writing statistical and analytical programming code in SAS
- Data visualization (e.g. Tableau)
- Experience leading projects with multiple partners and collaborators
- Time management skills and proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while completing projects within the allocated timeframes
- Superior analytical and problemsolving skills working both individually and as part of a team
- Ability to work collaboratively across programs and interact with all levels of departmental staff the public and other governmental and nongovernmental entities
- Communicable disease surveillance experience at a local or state public health department
- Experience with the CDCdeveloped National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) Base System (NBS)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience developing maintaining entering and extracting data from REDCap databases
- Experience collaborating with internal and external partners (e.g. CDC communitybased organizations)
Minimum Qualifications :
Education and Experience : Graduation from an accredited college or university with a doctoral degree in epidemiology public health biostatistics statistics or health informatics
Substitution of Education for Experience : Masters degree with experience equivalent to five years work experience in epidemiology.

The position is located in the Tennessee Department of Health Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness program in Nashville Tennessee. TDH staff in the Viral Hepatitis Program work to increase access to diagnosis and treatment to reduce viral hepatitis infection morbidity and mortality rates in Tennessee. This includes addressing viral hepatitisrelated health disparities.
TDH activities in support of this effort include :
1) conducting disease surveillance and outbreak planning early detection and rapid response;
2) improving access to prevention testing and treatment; and
3) building partnerships and establishing policies to address the viral hepatitis epidemic in Tennessee.
