Purpose of the Role:
The Lab IT Linux System Engineer is responsible for providing support to the lab computing Linux environment, which demands uninterrupted service in a state-of-the-art biomedical research center. Specific emphasis of the role includes building specialized Linux computing platforms, customizing system configurations, operational systems support to meet and exceed scientific demands of data scientists.
The Lab IT Linux Systems Engineer is an onsite role in Basel and will report directly to the Lab IT Linux Services Lead within TUS in BR Informatics and scientific community.
Major Accountabilities:
Linux/UNIX installation, configuration, upgrades, and new system builds
Build both Physical and Virtual systems
Linux systems hardware and software troubleshooting
Build new RHEL workstations for lab instrumentation: custom specifications, integrate the hardware, install and configure the operating system and ensure visibility to the network in accordance with the Novartis Standards and security guidelines
Provide technical expertise for the planning and definition of new system requirements
Create, track and close service tickets and updating of associated inventory /asset management tools
Analysis, assessment and remediation of security vulnerabilities for Linux systems
Consult with various vendors, scientists and customer levels to devise new and improved solutions that will streamline and/or expedite the delivery of improved laboratory research and its supporting business applications/processes
Ensure adherence to Novartis global Information Security and Quality standards and policies for all products/services
If applicable, ensure Regulatory Compliance (e.g. GLP & Google Cloud Platform) standards and policies for GxP products/services.
Experience Requirements (Core Skills and Capabilities):
Strong understanding and experience in Linux RHEL 8/9 and up in a global enterprise environment
In depth knowledge and experience with configuration management tools such as Cobbler, Chef
Redhat certification preferred or equivalent experience required
Hands on support of RHEL 8/9 systems
VMWare knowledge is a plus
Understanding of research processes and scientific information and how they relate to data science
Excellent interpersonal, communication, documentation and organizational skills
Self-motivated, proactive and a team player
Strong technical, problem solving, and effective communication skills
Working collaboratively in a team environment, coordinating with other teams including storage, network operations and informatics products
Experience in Biotech or Biopharma, Pharmaceutical Research or other lab as it relates to scientific instrumentation/vendors, software applications and systems
Exceptional troubleshooting skills and experience supporting non standard software
Education and Qualification Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline, computer science, engineering or mathematics; or four years related experience
3 years of experience in Linux and/or Unix Systems Administration in an enterprise scale production environment
At least 3 years of experience in IT support, IT Operations, or application support and development
