ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT :

The Film / TV department at Solano Community College is a dynamic hub for creativity and professional training, offering students a comprehensive education in film and television production. The program is designed to equip aspiring filmmakers and content creators with the skills needed to thrive in the rapidly evolving media industry. Students benefit from a diverse curriculum that includes lecture courses on mass media and U.S. culture in TV and film, as well as courses in screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, and media production.

Faculty members bring a wealth of professional experience to the classroom, ensuring that instruction is both relevant and inspiring. The department emphasizes hands-on learning, encouraging students to collaborate on projects that range from short films to broadcast productions, providing them with real-world experience and a portfolio of work by graduation.

At the heart of the Film / TV department is its state-of-the-art studio and production facilities. The department boasts a fully equipped recording studio and control room for live broadcasting with a TriCaster audio / video production system, professional-grade lighting grids, multiple studio and virtual sets, green screen capabilities, and high-definition cameras that mirror industry standards.

Editing labs feature cutting-edge software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and DaVinci Resolve, allowing students to master pre and post-production techniques. Additional resources include an array of specialized equipment such as drones, Steadicams, and 4K cameras. This robust technological infrastructure, paired with expert guidance from faculty, ensures that students graduate with the technical expertise and creative confidence needed to excel in the competitive fields of film and television.

DESCRIPTION :

The Film / TV Professor will teach a range of courses in film and television production, theory, and criticism, with a commitment to exploring the intersections of media and society. The ideal candidate will have expertise in diverse film theories, such as feminist film theory, and studies of systemic racism and representation in TV and film. This role requires a deep understanding of how film and television shape and are shaped by cultural, political, and historical contexts.? Further, the professor will guide students in the application of technical and creative skills in the production of video content in our state-of-the art studio.? The professor will create an inclusive learning environment that encourages critical thinking and empowers students to engage with media as both creators and consumers.

Key Responsibilities :

Teaching and Course Development :

• Teach courses in film and television production, film studies, screenwriting, editing, and media criticism.
• Integrate diverse film theories, such as feminist film theory and Queer Theory, into the curriculum.
• Address issues of systemic racism, gender inequality, and other forms of oppression as they appear in film and television.
• Use hands-on projects and industry-standard tools to teach production and storytelling techniques.
• Stay current with industry trends and integrate emerging technologies and practices into course content.

The position will also require providing instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations, preparing and grading assignments and examinations, meeting administrative timelines and submitting required documents and reports, participating in division meetings, coordinating course-level and program-level assessment and planning, and maintaining regular office hours in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Teaching assignments may include evening hours and off-campus instruction in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement, and participation in student outreach and recruiting as part of the Division and College-wide services.

We anticipate the first round of interviews to be conducted in-person the week of March 31st. Second round interviews are tentatively set for early April. All dates are subject to change.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must possess : a commitment to encouragement of learning and an enthusiastic attitude toward student learning; sensitivity to students from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds who may have wide ranges of abilities.

Master's degree in Film / Cinema and Media Studies, Film, Television, and Media Studies, Drama / Theater, Mass Communication OR Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND Master's degree in Visual Studies, Media Studies, English, or Communication OR the equivalent; OR a bachelor's degree in one of these fields and professional experience in film / TV production or media criticism; OR an Associates Degree and a California Technical Education Credential; OR the equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

WORK ENVIROMENT :

The recommended candidate(s) will work in a small office or larger room with multiple people, in a primarily sedentary nature, either sitting or standing. This role will require significant technology use, including long periods of looking at technology screens and entering information using a keyboard and / or mouse. Interruptions are likely in large room settings and in small office settings. Frequent use of online meetings using Zoom or Microsoft Teams with webcam on. Phone and email will be required to communicate with all campus communities. The recommended candidate(s) must utilize vision (near) to write and to read printed materials and computer screens; utilize hearing for ordinary and telephonic conversation and to hear sound prompts from equipment; utilize manual and finger dexterity to type / keyboard and / or utilize mouse and otherwise operate a computer and other office equipment.
