Qualifications
- Education: Bachelors degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, or related field (Masters preferred in some settings).
- Certifications: Certification in American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency; certification as a DHH educator or specialist is preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience working with deaf or hard of hearing individuals in educational or healthcare settings.
- Support and Advocacy: Provide support to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing in accessing services, understanding their rights, and ensuring full inclusion in various activities.
- Communication Assistance: Offer assistance in communication through American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation, transcription services, and utilizing other assistive communication technologies as needed.
- Educational Support: Work with teachers, administrators, and parents to help integrate deaf and hard-of-hearing students in classroom settings, including tutoring, providing modifications, and using appropriate tools.
- Assessments and Individualized Plans: Conduct assessments of the individuals needs and abilities, creating and implementing individualized educational plans (IEPs) or care plans as necessary.
- Training and Outreach: Educate and train staff, community members, and families on best practices for interacting with and supporting individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or other sign systems.
