CLASS TITLE: Accountant
DEFINITION:
This is a professional level position with responsibility for preparation, review, and accuracy of accounting functions and financial statements. The person in this position is responsible for the integrity of the general ledgers and ensuring accurate accounting records for the receipts and/or disbursements with the County. Duties include performing a variety of complex clerical and accounting tasks, applying accepted procedures to the preparation and maintenance of accounting and other records, and preparing financial, statistical and/or technical reports. The accountant is under the supervision and reports to the Finance Director.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Examples are illustrative only)
· Assist with weekly check preparation and distribution.
· Prepares and posts accounting documents, such as journal entries recording fees and cash receipts, or other documents such as invoices, vouchers, purchasing card posting documents.
· Performs monthly cash, credit card, and other account reconciliation and various balance sheet account controls to ensure accuracy.
· Evaluates subsidiary ledgers for errors and omissions and enters corrected data. Performs all tasks associated with the general ledger.
· May check and proof accounting or other reports for clerical accuracy and conformance to departmental, county and state procedures.
· Performs other duties as assigned
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
· Working knowledge of bookkeeping practices and generally accepted accounting principles.
· Ability to prepare financial and other records in a systematic, neat, legible manner.
· Ability to use accounting software, computer applications systems, EXCEL spreadsheets and Microsoft Word.
· Ability to work with a minimum amount of supervision and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and department heads.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND EDUCATION:
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration with one year experience in bookkeeping or accounting involving advanced record keeping.
OR
· Equivalent education, training and experience; additional experience can be substituted for the required education, 1 year of experience equals one year of college.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
· Maryland Class C Driver's License.
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
· Experience in governmental accounting.

Pay: $50,024.00 - $81,971.00 per year
