Position Summary
Operates or assists in the operation of motorized and mechanical equipment. Performs skilled and unskilled labor associated with the maintenance, repair, and reconstruction of bridges, roads, parking lots, guiderail, and drainage structures. This position is designated as essential to the emergency service function and is required to assist the division in meeting operational needs.

Essential Functions
1. Operates equipment in a safe and timely manner to ensure the efficient operation of the Division in accordance with division policies.
2. Performs skilled and unskilled labor to ensure the efficient operation of the division in accordance with departmental and divisional policies.
3. Maintains, services, cleans, and makes minor repairs of tools and equipment to ensure it is kept in good mechanical working condition.
4. Performs skilled and unskilled labor to ensure the sufficient operation of the division in accordance with division policies.
5. Drives trucks and hauls materials and/or equipment to and from projects in a safe and timely manner.
6. Performs work zone traffic control to ensure the flow of traffic is not disrupted.
7. Picks up recycling materials in a timely manner to ensure the efficient operation of the Public Works Department in accordance with County policies.
8. Performs other related duties as required and assigned by the Director of Public Works.
9. Operates spray equipment both hand carried and truck mounted.
11. Uses and maintains hand tools and equipment for brushing of ditches and hand digging of ditches.
12. Prepares necessary reports on brushing activities if requested.
13. Attends training to keep abreast of new safety and work practices established by OSHA.
14. Shovels and rakes all materials used to repair, construct, and maintain roads, bridges, and drainage structures.
15. Cleans culverts, catch basins, and other drainage structures using scavengers and/or hand tools following standardized procedures.
16. Installs and removes snow fence.
17. Drives trucks and hauls materials and equipment to and from projects in a safe and timely manner.
18. Loads and unloads trucks using mechanical equipment as well as manual labor.
19. Inspects and operates trucks and light equipment including, but not limited to, cement mixers, air compressors, two-wheel driver tractor loaders, rollers up to 5 tons, brush chippers, weed eaters, chain saws, self-propelled and push mowers, etc. in accordance with manufacturers’ recommended procedures to ensure that all equipment is in fit working condition.

Marginal Functions
1. Cleans debris along roadside to allow safe usage of roads.
2. Services trucks and light equipment including cleaning and lubricating and makes minor or emergency repairs using approved mechanical procedures.

Essential Qualifications

• The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent
• Have training/experience in the operation and maintenance of light and heavy motorized and mechanized equipment and/or trucks used in road, bridge or drainage structure, construction repair or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Knowledge of construction techniques, including the ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Must be able to operate two-wheel drive tractor loaders, rollers up to five tons, air compressors, cement mixers, sand blasters, bobcat mowers, weed whackers, chain saws, tandems, etc.
• Must be at least 18 years of age and in good physical condition.
• Must possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
• A Class A Commercial Driver’s License is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to utilize power tools. Experience in welding, carpentry, and the operation of heavy equipment. Training in the placement and finishing of concrete and blacktop. Ability to service and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment used in construction and maintenance work.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $45,000.00 per year
