Project SOUP is the food security program of the Somerville Homeless Coalition. Project SOUP serves roughly 2,000 Somerville residents every month. The pantry model is similar to a grocery store where clients have the ability to “shop” and select items that they prefer.
Position Summary
The Project SOUP Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for developing and executing a volunteer recruitment and training strategy. This position will strive to create a volunteer system that will require minimal staff time to maintain. This position will conceptualize and build out a robust volunteer onboarding and training system and will be responsible for overseeing the volunteer management database for SHC. They will support the Project SOUP Home Delivery program through scheduling deliveries and coordinating volunteer drivers. They will also support general pantry operations and community meals through recruiting and coordinating volunteers to distribute pantry items, cook and serve meals. Volunteers allow Project SOUP to operate with minimal overhead expenses, ensuring its sustainability to operate and act as an emergency resource for Somerville residents over time.
Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities
- Find creative, fun and innovative ways to recruit volunteers
- Maintain a volunteer management system for scheduling volunteers and tracking their time
- Respond to all volunteer inquiries in a timely manner
- Onboard and orient new volunteers to Project SOUP, including procedures, processes, and scheduling
- Build out an onboarding/training system for new volunteers with use of multimedia in various languages
- Support the weekly community meals by scheduling and supervising volunteers
- Support the Home Delivery program by scheduling client deliveries, inputting clients into the client database, and collecting grocery preferences
- Schedule and coordinate delivery drivers for the Home Delivery program
- Write and create content to express gratitude for volunteers
- Perform other duties to ensure overall smooth operation of the Project SOUP programs
- Work on the food pantry floor during pantry operating hours to provide support to volunteers and other staff members, with tasks including but not limited to distributing food directly to clients, setting up and cleaning up pantry, lifting and storing heavy boxes, and screening clients for program eligibility.
Education, Abilities, Competencies and Experience Required
- High School Diploma
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others
- Ability to work effectively with staff, clients, volunteers, vendors and community at-large
- Good organization and computer skills (Google Suite, email, word processing)
- Sensitivity to very low-income, elderly, disabled and homeless clientele
- Ability to comply with all relevant food safety procedures and guidelines to ensure an efficient, client-friendly, and compliant, food-safe environment
- High level of attention to detail, data management, and record keeping.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $22.00 - $24.04 per hour
