A Union Payroll Specialist is a professional responsible for managing the payroll processes for employees who are part of a union. This role involves ensuring that all union members are paid correctly according to their collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) and union rules. The responsibilities of a Union Payroll Specialist typically include:

Key Responsibilities:

Processing Payroll:

  • Ensure timely and accurate payroll processing for union employees.
  • Calculate wages, deductions, overtime, bonuses, and commissions based on union agreements and individual contracts.


Union Benefits and Deductions:

  • Administer union dues and other deductions (e.g., pension contributions, healthcare premiums).
  • Track and apply benefits like health insurance, pension plans, and other union-negotiated benefits.


Compliance with Union Contracts:

  • Adhere to the terms of the collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), which define pay rates, work hours, and other compensation policies.
  • Ensure that payroll complies with union-negotiated wage scales, overtime rules, and other stipulations.


Recordkeeping:

  • Maintain accurate records of union dues, hours worked, wages, and deductions.
  • Prepare reports for union leaders, employees, or government agencies as required.


Communication:

  • Work closely with union representatives to resolve payroll discrepancies or issues.
  • Communicate with employees about their pay, benefits, and deductions as needed.


Tax Filing:

  • Ensure that tax filings and reports are completed accurately, including local, state, and federal taxes.
  • Handle payroll tax calculations and prepare necessary paperwork for tax compliance.


Auditing and Reporting:

  • Perform audits to ensure that all payroll processes are compliant with union rules and governmental regulations.
  • Generate reports for union leadership, financial departments, or regulatory bodies.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Union Regulations: Understanding of collective bargaining agreements and labor laws.
  • Payroll Software Proficiency: Familiarity with payroll software systems like ADP, Paychex, or QuickBooks.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to ensure precise calculations and compliance.
  • Communication Skills: Clear communication with both employees and union representatives.
  • Accounting or Finance Background: Basic understanding of accounting principles and payroll taxes.


Education and Experience:

  • A degree in accounting, business administration, or human resources is often preferred.
  • Previous experience in payroll processing or labor relations is usually required.
  • Familiarity with unionized workforces or payroll in unionized environments is a significant asset.


This role is crucial in organizations where a significant portion of the workforce is unionized, ensuring the organization remains compliant with union rules and labor laws while processing payroll accurately.

Compensation: $27 to $32 an hour

Salary is based on a range of factors that include relevant experience, knowledge, skills, other job-related qualifications.
