Job Description
Position: Branch Library Assistant
Introduction:
The incumbent of this position is responsible for providing friendly, prompt, courteous assistance in finding print and non-print materials for patrons. The library clerk upholds the library’s mission of equal access to information for all patrons by assisting in finding and providing various books and other resources regardless of the information’s source, political, cultural or religious affiliation.
Duties:
- Greets each patron with a friendly and helpful smile.
- Checks material in and out which includes activation and deactivation of RFID security.
- Shelves and straightens all circulating material.
- Registers new patrons and creates new library cards.
- Provides reader’s advisory. Assists patrons with locating requested or recommended material.
- Promotes library programs.
- Processes holds for material requests which includes pulling items and contacting patrons of the item’s availability.
- Assists with programs as needed.
- Instructs patrons on e-readers and e-books.
- Collects fines and other fees and keeps accurate records of monies received. Advises patrons of any fines that may be on their account.
- Reconciles cash register and credit card machine at the close of business and runs a monthly register report at the end of the month.
- Communicates with supervisor and fellow staff regarding daily events, problems, etc.
- Acts as a notary
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor or director.
Experience:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. required
Knowledge Required by the Position:
- Working knowledge of computers.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to multitask and re-establish focus in an environment with frequent interruptions.
- Knowledge of collection and current trends in books and movies.
- Ability to count money and make change.
Supervisory Controls:
The incumbent serves under the general direction of the Branch Manager. Duties are performed without direct supervision. General policy guidance is provided through oral or published work duties and incumbent exercises independent judgment in making decisions to carry out objectives.
Guidelines:
Policy guidance is received from the supervisor and written by the Director.
Scope and Effect:
The reliability of the incumbent’s work product affects the overall operation of the branch library. The incumbent must be sensitive to the changing needs of the required daily duties as it affects the library staff and patrons of the library.
Personal Contacts:
The incumbent deals principally with the general public.
Physical Demands:
Must possess the mobility to work in the library setting which includes the ability to sit, stand, stoop, stretch, climb, lift, carry, shelve and retrieve books and materials from shelves and storage locations generally not exceeding 25 pounds.
Work Environment:
The work is performed primarily inside a library building.
