Job Summary
The Adult Specialist will support the Adult Services Librarian with planning, implementing, and promoting a rich variety of programs and services for adults, and with creating an environment that welcomes community members of all identities and abilities. They will carry out routine Circulation Desk duties and assist the Adult Services Librarian with defining and implementing new and existing procedures. The Specialist will work as part of a friendly and supportive staff to promote the joy of reading, reach out to the community and be welcoming to all Library visitors. This position includes participation in scheduled weekend rotations as part of the library’s evolving operational needs.
Examples of Duties
- Plans, schedules, and implements programs, book discussions, lectures, and instruction.
- Markets collections, services, and programs through print and online publicity.
- Works with the Adult Services Librarian to develop and maintain specific collections.
- Periodically assumes full responsibility for the operation and security of the library.
- Assists library leadership with staff scheduling.
- Assists patrons in the use of personal and library computers and equipment.
- Supervises volunteers.
- Prepares displays.
- Performs routine circulation and processing functions as needed.
- Offers reference and readers’ advisory assistance as needed.
- Enforces library policies and procedures in an appropriate manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with two years of library experience, equivalency considered.
- Rotating night and weekend availability are required.
Supplemental Information
- Prior experience working with books.
- Education in a library-related field or Vermont Library Certification preferred.
- Ability to speak, read, and write a language other than English preferred.
- Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and effectively with the public and other employees.
- Strong social media skills.
- Strong design and graphic design skills.
- Working knowledge of current trends in fiction and nonfiction.
- Expertise and proficiency with computers and related hardware, popular library software, internet, and digital communications.
- Ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy, efficiency, and dependability.

- Considerable knowledge of professional library principles, practices, and techniques.
