Job Summary
The Library Children Services Assistant - Youth is a member of the Children’s Services team. They engage and develop relationships with youth in grades 4-8. They prepare, publicize, and implement drop-in and planned programs under the direction of the Children Services Librarian. The Assistant creates engaging passive programs for a variety of ages and supports others in the department with programs and displays. They carry out routine Circulation Desk duties and assist patrons with technology needs. The Assistant provides a positive and welcoming experience to patrons of all ages. This position will work on Sundays and weekday afternoons.
Examples of Duties
- Greets patrons and shares accurate information about library programs and services.
- Plans and presents activities and programs for students in grades 4-8.
- Assists other staff with programs and activities for children 4-14 years old.
- Learns about children’s literature and award-winning titles, and features those in programs and diverse displays in The Hangout.
- Keeps track of new and noteworthy juvenile fiction and graphic novel series to complete and backfill.
- Assists patrons in finding materials and information. Collects and provides input to the Librarian regarding renovations to The Hangout and other areas in the Marabella KidSpace.
- Answers telephone and directs calls.
- Shelves materials as needed and reads shelves to ensure materials are in proper order.
- Processes materials.
- Performs routine circulation and processing functions as needed.
- Enforces library policies and procedures in an appropriate manner.
- Will occasionally be the only member of the department in the KidSpace.
- May occasionally be responsible for de-escalation in public interactions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent with 3 years customer service experience required, equivalency considered.
- Experience working with groups of children in grades 4-8 is required.
Supplemental Information
- Bachelor degree with one year of customer service experience, or equivalent, is preferred.
- Familiarity with current juvenile chapter books and series is preferred.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to learn library procedures and apply policies.
- Ability learn and apply new computer skills.
- Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy, efficiency, and dependability.
- Ability to handle difficult situations and use de-escalation techniques.
- Fluency in a language other than English is preferred.
