Job Responsibilities

With our Agency's mission to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses, we provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.

This position is located at the Department of Mental Health, Central Office, 2414 Bull Street, Columbia, SC 29201.

As the Program Coordinator I, working under minimal supervision of the Office of Suicide Prevention Program Manager and 988 Program Coordinator, the PSAP Collaboration and Outreach Coordinator is responsible for establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with all PSAP/91 I centers within the state to ensure seamless collaboration between the 988 Lifeline and emergency services. This role involves coordinating efforts to provide effective crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and mental health support across the 988 Crisis Continuum of Care partners.

Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Serves as a liaison for collaborative efforts to establish and maintain productive relationships with all PSAP/911 centers and 988 Lifeline Contact Centers.
  • Serves to train and educate PSAP/91I centers through the development and delivery of training programs for PSAP personnel regarding the 988 Continuum of Care partners and policies.
  • Coordinate with PSAP/91 I centers to enhance the integration of mental health crisis response within the broader emergency response system. Assist with developing protocols for situations requiring coordinated responses between the 988 Continuum of Care and PSAP/911 centers.
  • Coordinates the availability and distribution of crisis intervention resources and materials to PSAP/911 centers and ensures they have access to up-to-date crisis intervention protocols and guidelines.
  • Coordinates follow-up conversations with PSAP/91 I centers to debrief and identify opportunities for improvement during 988 emergency interventions. Troubleshoot and provide support after crisis situations, ensuring smooth coordination with 911 services.
  • Completes all DMH required trainings and seeks opportunities to advance knowledge/skills related to job duties.
  • Ensures adherence to agency's Corporate Compliance Policies and Plan.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

State Minimum Requirement: A high school diploma and relevant program experience.

Preferred Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in behavioral health discipline, four (4) years' experience in crisis intervention and mental health support, and two (2) years' program coordination experience. Prior experience working in a 911/PSAP or as an emergency dispatcher and experience as an interagency liaison.

Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

Additional Comments

The selected candidate must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with necessary agencies, organizations and Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs). Ability to identify and and effectively utilize resources available in the community to accomplish objectives. Must have knowledge and understanding of 911 emergency services, PSAP operations, and the 988 Crisis Care Continuum. Strong written and verbal communication as well as strong interpersonal skills are required. Ability to utilize a computer to collect and maintain data as well as prepare reports. Must be flexible. Will provide statewide coordination for 988 and 911/PSAPs. Requires statewide travel with minimal overnight stays.
