As a Special Agent, you will enforce criminal tax statutes relative to tax administration and related financial crimes to encourage and achieve, directly or indirectly, voluntary compliance with South Carolina’s tax laws.
Primary Job Duties Include
- Assisting and observing the development of cases. This includes securing evidence and documents, interviewing the subject or witnesses, and preparing affidavits.
- Assisting and observing the preparation of investigative reports on all cases approved for prosecution.
- Assisting and observing arrest procedures. This includes preparing affidavits, securing arrest warrants, executing arrests, transporting prisoners, conducting booking procedures at a detention facility, and attending and presenting information at the bond hearing.
- Attending and presenting information and testimony at preliminary hearings and the county grand jury. This includes assisting the prosecutor with plea arrangements.
- Preparing and submitting routine incident, activity, and administrative reports.
- Providing protective services functions for the SCDOR to ensure the safety and protection of all employees, visitors, and property.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
- A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency; or
- A bachelor’s degree
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to pass a credit check, psychological evaluation, reading comprehension test, and a medical screening.
- Will be required to attend and successfully complete the basic law enforcement certification program at the SC Criminal Justice Academy if not already certified.
- Must be able to obtain a SC Constable Commission I, as required by SLED.
These qualifications are not required but are considered when setting a starting salary.
- A bachelor’s degree with 12 semester hours in accounting and four years of accounting, auditing, or law enforcement experience.
- An associate’s degree with 12 semester hours in accounting and six years of accounting, auditing, or law enforcement experience.
- A high school diploma and eight years of accounting, auditing, or law enforcement experience.
- Knowledge of SC criminal code provisions.

- Training: You will work in a trainee mode alongside senior level agents to learn the process for developing non-complex cases.

- Hours: Work hours are 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday (37.5 hours per week).

- Office location: Depending on space availability, you may have the option to choose which SCDOR office you work in (Columbia, Charleston, Florence, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, or Rock Hill.).
