Job Responsibilities
Conducts traffic studies or inventories, such as traffic counts, field surveys, speed studies, etc. to collect and maintain data for evaluation of field conditions. Makes recommendations to improve traffic control, operation, and safety based on field observations and data. Inspects traffic control devices (signals, signs, and pavement markings) for compliance, improvements, deficiencies, damage, or possible sight obstructions using state and federal guidelines. Attends preconstruction meetings and performs final inspections for construction projects when assigned. Uses specialized computer programs for the archiving, design, fabrication, and installation of traffic control devices. Prepares complex drawings using computer-aided drafting skills showing field conditions or proposed traffic control improvements. Prepares traffic study reports and responses to inquiries from others, including SCDOT personnel, state and federal agencies, and the public, concerning the operation of the South Carolina highway system. Provides customer service and routinely communicates with the general public. Maintains all traffic files in accordance with set standards. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
A motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
