Overview
We are seeking a medical billing and coding instructor who will be responsible for teaching students the principles of medical coding and billing, including how to accurately code diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes, submit insurance claims, manage billing processes, and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations. Applicants must possess in-depth knowledge of medical billing practices, coding guidelines, and relevant healthcare laws to effectively train students for entry-level positions in the medical billing field. Key responsibilities of a medical billing and coding instructor:

  • Curriculum development: Design and deliver a comprehensive medical billing and coding curriculum that aligns with industry standards and current regulations.
  • Classroom instruction:Teach students the proper use of coding systems (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS), including coding guidelines, modifiers, and coding rules.
  • Practical application:Provide hands-on training through simulated scenarios, case studies, and practice exercises to prepare students for real-world billing situations.
  • Claim submission and denial management:Teach students how to accurately submit electronic claims, identify potential billing errors, and address claim denials through appeals processes.
  • Compliance training: Educate students on HIPAA regulations, coding compliance issues, and ethical practices in medical billing.
  • Assessment and evaluation:Regularly assess student progress through quizzes, exams, and practical assessments to identify areas needing further support.
  • Student advising: Guide students regarding career pathways, job opportunities, and professional development.

Required skills and qualifications:

  • Certified medical coder:Possession of a recognized medical coding certification (e.g., CPC, CCS, CIC) is usually mandatory.
  • Experience in medical billing: Extensive experience in medical billing and coding roles within a healthcare setting.
  • Teaching skills:Proven ability to effectively deliver lectures, facilitate discussions, and guide students through complex concepts.
  • Technical proficiency: Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems, billing software, and online learning platforms.
  • Strong communication skills:Ability to clearly explain technical information, answer student questions, and provide constructive feedback.
  • Attention to detail: Meticulous focus on accuracy when reviewing coding assignments and addressing billing errors.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in medical billing and coding, preferably within a healthcare setting.
  • Familiarity with Epic electronic health record system is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of HCPCS, ICD-9, and medical coding principles.
  • Background in health information management is preferred.
  • Ability to educate peers through classroom settings or training sessions effectively.
  • Excellent attention to detail with strong organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with healthcare professionals and patients.
  • A solid understanding of physiology to support accurate coding decisions.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $27.00 - $34.00 per hour

Expected hours: 25 per week
