South Dakota State University (SDSU) is seeking an Assistant Director of Financial Aid to join our team. This role plays a key part in supporting student success by helping to oversee financial aid programs, ensuring compliance, and providing guidance to students and families. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, collaborative, and committed to making higher education attainable through effective financial aid administration. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.

The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships’ mission is to transform lives by providing access to higher education through high quality and innovative services that promote student success and empowerment in an environment that values collaboration, continuous improvement, professional development and employee wellbeing. An integral part of the Student Affairs Division, the office works closely with other offices within the division, as well as within Budget and Finance. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reports to the Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships and serves as a member of the financial Aid Management Team.
- Collaborates with senior staff to oversee office functions and strategic initiatives.
- Oversees multiple financial aid programs, including federal and state aid.
- Manages staff training, compliance, and campus outreach efforts.
- Supervises and trains financial aid staff.
- Administers summer awarding, PLUS Loan, and award revision programs.
- Oversees FAFSA comment code resolution and other student eligibility issues.
- Manages professional judgment reviews for income changes and special circumstances.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree earned by the date of hire;
- At least three years of experience in administration of financial aid programs;
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to effectively supervise and handle difficult customer situations:
- Strong analytical and critical reasoning skills:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills: and
- Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with interpreting federal regulations and federal financial aid compliance;
- Experience working with financial aid awarding and student information system set-up.
- NASFAA credentials or a Certified Financial Aid Administrator designation; and
- Supervision experience.
