Duties of the position include:
- assemble, install, configure, calibrate, maintain, monitor, troubleshoot, and repair electrical and electronic components used in roadside and central intelligent transportation systems, such as environmental and roadway sensors, cctv cameras, electronic message signs, traffic detection equipment, cellular modems, communication switches, and others;
- respond to reports of malfunctioning equipment to identify and resolve operational problems;
- read and interpret factory manuals, blueprints, schematics, plans, and drawings to configure and repair intelligent transportation systems equipment;
- use industry-standard electrical and electronic test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, circuit analyzers, and diagnostic software to monitor and diagnose operation;
- contact vendor technical staff for aid in troubleshooting complex problems and seeking solutions to equipment problems;
- conduct scheduled and as-needed site inspections and maintenance;
- arrange supply of materials and electrical service at installation sites;
- record equipment history, repair and calibration activity, inventory status, and time accountability through documentation of personal activity and equipment maintenance;
- support administrative activities such as data entry, copy, filing, and document organizing;
- operate vehicles and other motorized equipment such as an aerial lift and skid steer loader to install, repair, and replace intelligent transportation systems equipment;
- learn and apply knowledge of tools and techniques used in the installation and configuration of its equipment;
- participate in evaluating and recommending new technology applications of its hardware and software;
- draw, annotate, and review plan drawings and cost estimates for its equipment;
- provide technical support, guidance, and training related to intelligent transportation systems and equipment;
- direct work for a crew of summer interns;
- perform related work as assigned.
A significant amount of work will be along highways exposed to traffic and weather.

The total compensation of Hourly Wage State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Intelligent Transportation Systems Technician is approximately $64.45.00 annually.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Associate degree in electronic technology or high school diploma from an accredited school or its equivalent with two (2) years of experience in IT support, networking, or directly related field.
A valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- methods, practices, tools, and equipment for installing, maintaining, and operating electronic equipment;
- basic principles and practices of electronics, electrical measures, and circuitry;
- basic mathematics and high school level algebra;
- general construction and field operations;
- safety precautions;
- record keeping.
Skills to:
- proficiency in MS Office Suite;
- analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills;
- operate various hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment such as aerial lift and skid steer loader;
- use and care for electrical and electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, volt-ohm meters, digital logic analyzers, communications line quality monitors, transducer test and calibration equipment, fiber optic testing devices, and other such equipment;
- use hand tools and soldering/unsoldering devices to assemble and repair printed circuit boards and other electronic devices at the component level.
Ability to:
- read, interpret, and understand technical manuals, electronic schematic diagrams, plans, and drawings;
- configure electronic equipment, components, and systems;
- troubleshoot hardware and software;
- repair common defects in electronic equipment, components, and systems;
- maintain proficiency on new equipment and devices as the technology evolves;
- communicate technical information in written, oral, and visual forms with end users and managers;
- work as a team member and independently;
- lead crew of summer interns for equipment installation and maintenance;
- meet deadlines and comply with agency policies;
- effectively apply organizational and time management skills and handle frequent interruptions;
- focus on tasks and recall details;
- exercise sound judgment in making decisions;
- follow applicable safety procedures when working in traffic;
- lift objects weighing as heavy as 50 pounds;
- work outdoors in diverse weather and traffic conditions;
- travel frequently with overnight stays;
- work overtime when necessary and respond to call outs necessary to maintain required operations.
