TITLE: English Learner High School Teacher
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Support Services and Principals
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Pennsylvania ESL Program Specialist Certification required.
- Additional Pennsylvania Instructional Certification in Reading Specialist, or English 7-12.
- Current child abuse clearance, criminal background clearance, FBI clearance, and negative TB test results.
- Experience in teaching English language learners and/or experience teaching at the elementary level or teaching reading/English is preferred.
- Advanced training in reading instruction is helpful.
- WIDA certifications preferred.
Description:
This position is considered to be a professional certified position. The position provides English as a Second Language instruction to English language learners in grade levels assigned, from kindergarten through twelfth grades.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate knowledge of second language acquisition, linguistics, teaching content English to English Language Learners, and sensitivity to cross-cultural aspects of teaching and learning are necessary.
- Coordinate, facilitate, screen and identify English language learners in adherence with state timelines to determine their English language proficiency level in order to determine appropriate educational placement.
- Determine appropriate placement for the English language learner and overall language instructional program.
- Communicate and notify parents that their child has been screened and will be receiving ESL services in the District English Language Development Program.
- Reassess and if necessary reclassify English language learners based on their English language proficiency levels.
- Coordinate and maintain a schedule for student instruction for the English language learners and adhering to that schedule. Modify and update the schedule as necessary when there is a newly enrolled or identify English language learner.
- Maintain and file all required documentation on behalf of the English language learner that shall be maintained in their respective permanent record file at the building level and for the ESL program by mandated due dates such as home language survey, parent notification letter, screening results, state annual assessment results, progress reports, post-exit monitoring forms, etc.
- Facilitate daily lesson plans that provide sound educational and language developing academic achievement for the students that are based on the English language development standards and state academic standards. The ESL Teacher will also incorporate regular use of formal and authentic assessment into the daily curriculum which will be recorded in a cumulative grade book.
- Responsible for providing English language learners their required hours of English language instruction based on their English language proficiency level in a manner that ensures development of their English language skills by addressing: language proficiency, development of literacy and academic language competence, provide support and information to help the student adjust to and become integrated into his/her culture, and on-going assessment through monitoring and documenting student progress.
- Assist with the coordination and administration of the required annual state English language proficiency assessment (i.e. WIDA ACCESS 2.0). Analyze assessment results and collaborate with other administrators regarding the results. Update certifications as required annually.
- Coordinate and document collaboration with content area teachers regarding communication pertaining to English language learners in order to monitor their academic growth. Work as an integral member of the English language learner’s instructional team by assisting with planning, decision-making, and conferencing regarding the English language learner.
- Communicate in a collaborative manner with other school personnel to ensure compliance with policies in the area of ESL.
- Communicate with the English language learner’s parents/guardians concerning their child’s academic progress and growth while maintaining sensitivity to language and cultural similarities and differences.
- Assist with the coordination of the annual ESL parent outreach meeting.
- Maintain personal professional growth by taking part in staff development, actively seeking and developing effective approaches to instruction through the application of best practices in pedagogy.
- Promote proactive communication and collaborate with administrators and all staff across the District as required, and contribute to program effectiveness and development.
- Support and adhere to all school and civil laws, policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and directives.
- Exhibit professionalism at all times.
- Any other instructional, curriculum, and/or student/school supervisory duties assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the South Fayette Township Board of Education and the South Fayette Education Association.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated by, but not limited to, the Director of Pupil Personnel, the principals and communicated to the superintendent for review.
