TITLE: Middle School (6-8) Art Teacher
REPORTS TO: Middle School Principals
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Pennsylvania teaching certificate, Art Education PK-12
- 3.0 or higher QPA
- Proof of ongoing professional or educational experience
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Digital literacy
JOB GOALS:
- To develop in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual media, using skills and techniques appropriate to the student's interests and abilities
- To integrate art with other subject areas
- To utilize digital tools to engage students in innovative learning, including design opportunities
- To develop student abilities in 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art making techniques including but not limited to: drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, found object, photography, fibers, jewelry/metal arts, and digital media.
- To foster behaviors that encourages creativity and creative problem-solving
- To develop student abilities to identify and solve problems through visual art
- To utilize art as a method to explore and appreciate our diverse world
- To create a classroom environment and contribute to a middle school program that is developmentally appropriate for the middle school-aged student
- To motivate students to develop knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to provide a foundation for continued learning
- To differentiate instruction within the classroom in accordance with each student’s ability and needs
- To establish collaborative relationships with parents, students, and other staff members
- To bring new ideas to the middle school art program in order to be future-focused, student-centered, and innovation-driven
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides instruction by which students develop the ability to make critical and aesthetic judgments about art.
- Teaches knowledge and skills as articulated in the District’s approved curriculum.
- Functions as an integral part of the teaching team by coordinating instruction, participating in the design of interdisciplinary instruction, accepting professional responsibilities, and assisting in the development of effective behavior modification strategies.
- Plans and presents art displays and exhibits designed to showcase students' learning for the school and the community.
- Instructs students in basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the District.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials to meet the learning needs of all students.
- Facilitates opportunities for the continuous growth and development of the art program.
- Provides different types of instruction as appropriate to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
- Translates lesson plans into learning experiences that provide a balance between teacher-led and student-centered learning.
- Instructs students on the care and use of tools and equipment, and organizes materials, tools, and equipment to prevent loss or abuse while minimizing time for distribution and collection.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Evaluates students’ academic growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
- Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to convey the goals of the program and discuss students’ progress.
- Identifies student needs and coordinates with other staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Creates an effective, safe, and conducive environment for learning.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
- Selects and requisitions instructional materials; maintains required inventory records.
- Budgets materials appropriately for curricular experiences, independent learning opportunities, and requests for projects/experiences by administration.
- Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Participates in curriculum development as required.
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
- Demonstrates computer literacy by providing all correspondence and written documentation using Google, Windows, and/or Mac based tools and applications.
- Demonstrates computer literacy in using the administrative software program effectively to maintain and retrieve student information and attendance data and to maintain student grades and performance assessments (Canvas, PowerSchool).
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the South Fayette Township Board of Education and the South Fayette Education Association.
EDUCATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated by the building principals and communicated to the superintendent for review.
