As a Commercial Underwriter, you will be responsible for evaluating and analyzing commercial loan applications to assess creditworthiness and mitigate lending risks. You will collaborate closely with loan officers, borrowers, and other stakeholders to gather and analyze financial data, conduct risk assessments, and provide recommendations for loan approvals or rejections. Your attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and ability to interpret complex financial information will be essential in ensuring prudent lending decisions and maintaining the bank's portfolio quality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Review and analyze commercial loan applications to assess borrowers' creditworthiness, repayment capacity, and adherence to lending policies and procedures.
- Collect and evaluate financial statements, tax returns, cash flow projections, and other relevant documents to determine borrowers & financial health and stability.
- Conduct risk assessments by analyzing industry trends, market conditions, and collateral values to mitigate potential credit risks.
- Prepare detailed credit memos summarizing findings, risk ratings, and recommendations for loan approvals or rejections.
- Communicate effectively with loan officers, borrowers, and other stakeholders to address inquiries, gather additional information, and clarify loan terms.
- Collaborate with loan officers and relationship managers to structure loan terms, pricing, and collateral requirements based on credit analysis findings.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, internal policies, and industry best practices in underwriting commercial loans.
- Monitor and manage existing loan portfolios to identify potential risks, covenant violations, or adverse developments, and recommend appropriate actions to mitigate losses.
- Stay updated on market trends, economic indicators, and industry developments to inform underwriting decisions and risk management strategies.
- Provide support and guidance to junior underwriters, loan assistants, and other team members as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree or professional certifications (e.g., CFA, CPA) preferred. Candidate must possess a full understanding of all aspects of the lending business.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in commercial underwriting or credit analysis within a banking or financial institution.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial statements, cash flow projections, and other complex financial data.
- Knowledge of commercial lending principles, credit risk assessment methodologies, and regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency in financial analysis software (e.g., Moody's Analytics, Sageworks) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
- Detail-oriented approach with a focus on accuracy and precision in underwriting commercial loans.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically in evaluating credit risks and proposing solutions.
