: OVERVIEW OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT The South San Francisco Unified School District (SSFUSD) community includes 15 schools supporting 8,000 students in Daly City, San Bruno, and South San Francisco. Our mission is that in partnership with our community, SSFUSD will provide exceptional instruction, engaging experiences, and equitable and accessible opportunities and resources to further support our diverse student body so that students are equipped to learn, thrive, navigate their future with purpose, and impact their community. In February 2024, the School Board for SSFUSD adopted our new Vision and Five-Year Strategic Plan. As a member of the Cabinet, the Assistant Superintendent of Student and Family Services, will be responsible for leading initiatives to ensure the district delivers on its promises in the Strategic Plan. POSITION SUMMARY The Assistant Superintendent of Student and Family Services joins SSFUSD at a pivotal moment for the district, as we embark on our five-year journey to strengthen instruction, empower educators, and center students through powerful partnerships and equitable systems. As a senior leader in the district, the Assistant Superintendent will play a key role in leading district- wide initiatives. The Assistant Superintendent of Student and Family Services will also take responsibility for many of the initiatives within our Engaged Students and Purposeful Partnerships priorities from our Strategic Plan, including creating a welcoming learning environment, supporting staff to take actions to foster a welcoming, inclusive learning environment, bolster awareness and access to socio-emotional, physical, and mental health supports for all students, and promote academic and career goal-setting for students. To advance purposeful partnerships, the Assistant Superintendent will work directly with families and community partners to define a vision for purposeful partnership, pilot a Family Resource Center (FRC), strengthen communication between families and schools, and explore community schools models. The Assistant Superintendent reports directly to the Superintendent, serves as a member of Cabinet, and manages the Student and Family Services Department. The Assistant Superintendent is responsible for overall planning, organization, and administration of all Student and Family Services programs and policies, including attendance and discipline policies. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Provide Org-wide Leadership as a Member of CabinetServe as a member of the Superintendent’s senior cabinet, advising on and contributing to district-wide initiatives. Work with the Superintendent and other Cabinet members to implement our Strategic Plan, including annual strategic initiatives in service of Strategic Plan.Collaborate with other Cabinet and department leaders to ensure alignment across district programs and initiatives. Act as a spokesperson for the district, including publicly representing SSFUSD and the Superintendent in Board of Education meetings, at schools, in the community, and to county and state institutions.Model SSFUSD values, foster professional growth, and support strong people-centered culture across the district. Lead Student and Family Services StrategyDevelop a multi-year vision for student and family services, including creating a welcoming environment, socio-emotional, physical, and mental health supports for students, staff training and support, and attendance and discipline supports, with effective execution and an emphasis on customer service and strong systems. In collaboration with school leaders and district leaders, design and lead implementation for new strategies related to student and family services.Partner with the Teaching and Learning and Talent departments to ensure teachers are onboarded, supported, and given the resources needed to welcome and support students in their classrooms.Set goals for the Student and Family Services department, and lead the department through a change management process to deliver on goals. Use student data, family surveys, and regular engagement with families and other community partners to effectively analyze trends and plan for the future. Lead engagement with families and community on behalf of SSFUSDLead collaboration with families and the community to develop a vision for ongoing engagement, then implement the strategy on behalf of the district. Oversee the development of a Family Resource Center, a one-stop-shop to meet families needs, including basic items as well as support with enrollment, student services, etc., and other programs and structures to support our district’s students and families.Strengthen two-way communication with all families and create a great customer service experience for families. Train SSFUSD staff on customer service best practices so that families feel respected and are treated as assets. Reimagine district office reception and other district office spaces to make them welcoming and inclusive to families and students. Address and respond to all parent requests, concerns, and complaints. Maintain and serve as the liaison between the district and community groups, such as the Police Department, Fire Department, San Mateo County Health Services and other county offices, and other community agencies. Support the district and schools with emergency communications. Provide high-quality counseling to students through academic and wellness counseling programsOversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of district counseling programs, including both academic and wellness counseling / mental health programs.Ensure accurate records of students served through counseling programs.Collaborate closely with the Teaching and Learning department on academic counseling, professional development, program goals, and implementation.Monitor contracts for student counseling to ensure students receive high-quality services. Maintain and improve equitable systems for student support, attendance, and disciplineDesign, lead, coordinate, and implement SSFUSD’s Multi-Tiered Student Support (MTSS) System for students. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines around attendance and discipline, including reporting. Support attendance in schools through accurate collection of attendance data, data review with school sites, and direct support to families and students. Manage systems and calendar for annual student registration and enrollment process; set expectations for school administrative assistants’ support with enrollment, and provide training as needed to ensure timely registration and enrollmentMonitor monthly enrollment, and manage state reporting of student enrollment and attendance, including the annual census day reporting to CBEDS.Develop annual enrollment forecasts by grade and school for general ed students and multilingual learners; manage demographers as needed for multi-year enrollment forecasts Oversee extended learning opportunitiesSet the strategy for our extended learning opportunities (e.g., before and after school, and summer school), in compliance with the Extended Learning Opportunity Program (ELOP) grant.Manage the Extended Learning Opportunity Program (ELOP) Manager, who oversees summer / after school program planning, implementation, and reporting..Support the ELOP Manager to manage and liaise with key partners / vendors needed to implement our ELOP programs. *Note: The job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of duties, responsibilities, and activities that are required of the employee. REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES, AND CERTIFICATIONS Education: Preferred: Master’s Degree and/or Doctoral Degree (Ed.D.) from accredited college or university Required: Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college or university Experience: Preferred: At least three (3) years in a PK-12 public school district management role; At least three (3) years as a PK-12 public school site leader (Principal/Assistant Principal); At least three (3) years of PK-12 public school district teaching or counseling experience;Experience with family engagement, attendance oversight, enrollment forecasting, partnership managementRequired: At least three (3) years of PK-12 public school district or public/private sector administration and management experience Licenses: Preferred: NoneRequired: Administrative Valid California Driver’s License; Valid California Clear Administrative Services CredentialCertifications: Preferred: NoneRequired: California Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Check/Fingerprint Clearance WORKING CONDITIONS Environment: Office environment with travel between district offices, school sites, and other facilities.
