Job Description Summary
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, Supervisor, and/or Director of Pharmacy Services, performs a wide variety of technical and clerical duties for the hospital-wide unit dose drug distribution system and intravenous admixture program. Responsible to maintain confidential reports, enter and retrieve data utilizing the computer system, prepare intravenous medication, including but not limited to, chemotherapeutic preparations, hyperalimentations and antibiotics, fill automated medication dispensing system with a supply of unit dose medications, procure and fill requests for pharmaceutical supplies and deliver supplies to nursing units.
Job Description
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1 - Performs all duties and responsibilities for to Central Pharmacy Medication Dispensing which includes Carousel functionality, inventory adjustments, expiration date tracking and demand picks of floor stock medication. Performs monthly outdate checks of Pharmacy Inventory as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.
2 - Performs all duties and responsibilities for Automative Dispensing Machine (ADM) to include Omnicell functionality with Batch filling and patient specific bin restocks. Demonstrate proficiency in other tasks such as Outdating, Transfers, and Modifying pockets.
3 - Perform all duties and responsibilities for Extemporaneous Non-Sterile Compounding and Oral Syringe preparation. Able to demonstrate appropriate labeling, expiration dating, and logging of compounds in the electronic or paper logs when appropriate.
4 - Perform all duties and responsibilities for medication repackaging to include operation of the automated Unit Dose packer (Eucilid) and manual packaging of Chemotherapy/Hazardous medication. Must be proficient with other repackaging tasks such as making kits and barcode labeling.
5 - Performs all duties and responsibilities for Code Cart exchange, Code Cart Trays, and Transport Boxes.
6 - Performs all duties and responsibilities for Sterile Products production. Performs required cleanings and restocking when required. Passes yearly competency showing proficiency in clean room procedures and sterile product preparation. Fully understands concepts of gowning, hand washing and cleaning of all areas. Able to demonstrate timely recording of tasks required in electronic signature logs which include cleaning logs, temperature logs and humidity logs in the IV room.
7 - Performs all duties and responsibilities for Non-Sterile Hazardous Drug compounding. Passes yearly competency showing proficiency in hazardous room procedures which include gowning, compounding and cleaning of the Biological Safety cabinet. Must be proficient enough to train and educate new technicians and students in this area. Must show proficiency in monthly cleaning breakdown of the biological safety cabinet.
8 - Assists with all duties and responsibilities for training of new technicians in job duties/responsibilities, procedures, and techniques. Identifying areas for improvement (constructive criticism) and provides feedback to the supervisor. Provides mentorship and ongoing education for technicians new in the position. Signs off Orientation checklists when appropriate.
9 - Performs all duties and responsibilities dealing with customer service, quality assurance, inventory management, maintaining a orderly, clean and safe environment.
10 - Assists Pharmacy Supervisor in assisting with yearly competencies in either the Sterile Compounding area or Non-Sterile Hazardous compounding area. Able to critique peers and provide constructive feedback. Finalizes competency sign-off and reports issues to Pharmacy Supervisor or Manager.
11 - Serves as a liaison by communicating issues to their direct supervisor and leads by example to the pharmacy staff. Participates in Pharmacy Team meetings and operational meetings. When necessary, helps out with project work and volunteers to tackle issues. Actively helps out with Omnicell projects, Compounding projects or any other projects needed.
12 - Performs anything else deemed necessary by their supervisor or Pharmacist on duty (other duties required).
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education - Preferred
High school level of education preferred.
Minimum Work Experience
4 year acute care (hospital) pharmacy experience that includes IV admixture, Sterile Hazardous medication compounding and Non-Sterile Hazardous Drug Compounding. Experience in training of newly hired Technicians and performing yearly competencies of other Technicians in either Sterile or Non-Sterile Compounding.
Required Certifications
Pharmacy Technician – Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy AND
Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) – Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
Preferred (not required) Certifications
PTCB - Pharmacy Technician Training Board
ExCPT - Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians
NRCPhT - Nationally Registered Certified Pharmacy Technician
