Description
This position is responsible for the organization and maintenance of a simulated nursing laboratory for students to practice and acquire psychomotor skills, used in nursing. Facilitates student acquisition of technical nursing skills.
Examples of Duties
Assist's students in acquiring selected nursing skills by demonstrating the appropriate methods. Supervises and tutors' students during practice performance in the laboratory.
Creates a learning environment that will enhance students' ability to use conceptual thinking and problem-solving skills.
Works closely with departmental faculty to plan strategies that will increase the student(s) ability to meet clinical skill requirements.
Maintains the laboratory, orders supply, keeps inventory, and orders various anatomical training aids and multimedia supplies including computer software and videotapes.
Provides medical equipment and supplies needed for demonstration of clinical procedures.
Disposes of damaged nursing teaching supplies and equipment. Assumes the responsibility of establishing and maintaining a system for removing disposable "sharps" from the nursing laboratory, orders replacement parts for laboratory equipment.
Maintains records of student attendance and skill performance in a college laboratory.
Maintains clinical compliance for faculty and students.
Establishes and maintains a positive contact with students, faculty, adjunct faculty, and other school personnel as well as a variety of nursing-related vendors, associations, schools, hospitals and agencies to ensure effective use of labs, clinical practicum sites, and availability of supplies for purchase or rental purposes in the most economical manner.
Performs other duties as required.
Typical Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Current Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) License, supplemented by a minimum of two year's experience in clinical nursing practices and previous teaching experience.
- Computer proficiency is required.
- Must possess excellent communication skills, the ability to work effectively with a diverse student body and the ability to maintain good working relationships with staff.
- Must be self-directed, innovative, and able to assess current operations to develop practical action programs to improve the functioning of the department.
- Possess the physical abilities and knowledge to operate a variety of equipment, lift objects, store equipment, and carry supplies to the other campus. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required with the ability to interact effectively with students.
- Must be able to work well within a culturally diverse environment with the ability to handle situations with tact and diplomacy.

This is a regular full-time support staff position for 37.5 hours a week, 52 weeks per year, classified as Grade XIV on the Support Staff Salary Schedule. The work hours are : 8 : 30am-4 : 30pm. The annual salary comes with the following employee benefits :
