JOB TITLE: School Bus Driver Trainer
REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: Maintain, enhance and implement the training program for school bus drivers of South Whidbey School District to assure the safety of the students being transported.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Plan and schedule training programs for bus drivers.
Plan recruitment program for bus drivers; including substitutes, to determine qualification. Recommend successful applicants to the transportation supervisor.
Run training programs for new drivers and annual in-service training for all drivers. Advise drivers of state regulations and district policy related to pupil transportation.
Conduct special training programs for drivers transporting handicapped students, including use of special devices, tools or equipment.
Understands, interprets and applies RCW’s, WAC’s, district policies and departmental procedures.
Conducts road tests and check rides for potential drivers as necessary for certification.
Maintain the developing training records and driver certification records for each bus driver in training.
Attends in-service programs to maintain instructor certification, appropriate meetings on pupil transportation issues, ESD Driver Trainers Association, or as assigned by the transportation supervisor.
Maintain current knowledge of driving, training, and safety requirements.
Coordinate training activities with the Supervisor of Transportation.
Provide bus driver training and instruction for drivers to maintain in-service and renewal training requirements.
Maintain driver training records in accordance with State requirements and District policies.
Maintain current knowledge of all state and local traffic laws, especially those pertaining to the safe operation of school buses.
Supervises children on the bus.
Provide training for all new and returning bus drivers in the following areas: defensive driving, policies and procedures, and all other areas of school bus driver orientation/training as necessary.
Maintain certification and drives a bus for routes needing coverage.
Works well with both supervisors and other members of the team.
Maintains consistent and punctual attendance.
All other duties appropriate to the position or as assignment by the supervisor.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
Completed Driver Instructor Training Program (DITC) overseen by OSPI.
Two years successful experience in pupil transportation with school bus driving, school bus driver training responsibilities, and school bus driver training experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret written regulations, procedures and manuals.
Ability to write reports, routine correspondence, evaluations and procedure manuals.
Ability to respond to inquiries from parents and communicate with drivers.
Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral forms.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute ratio and percent.
Computer proficient with ability to maintain required computer records.
Possess general office skills including typing and 10-key calculator.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to situations and carry out instructions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Washington commercial driver's license, Class B, with passenger (S) endorsement.
DOT physical certification.
First aid/CPR school bus driver certification.
School bus driver instructor certification.
Washington State school bus driver instructors are required to complete a yearly inservice training class in order to maintain their authorization.
