Job Title: Legal Advocate - Domestic Violence Agency
Job Overview:
The Legal Advocate will provide essential support to survivors of domestic violence and their children, focusing on legal matters such as protective orders, court advocacy, and referral services. This position will support survivors through the legal process, providing guidance, emotional support, and information to help them navigate their rights and options.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accompany survivors to court, offering advocacy, emotional support, and information about their rights and the legal process.
- Assist survivors in completing Crime Victims Compensation applications.
- Serve as a liaison between survivors and law enforcement, criminal prosecutors, and the courts.
- Screen survivors for eligibility for services and make appropriate referrals when needed.
- Provide short-term peer counseling (6-10 weeks) to support survivors in achieving their goals.
- Advocate on behalf of survivors with other agencies and systems while maintaining confidentiality.
- Facilitate weekly support groups for women and children affected by domestic violence.
- Maintain accurate and timely case records and share on-call responsibilities with the team.
- Participate in community education, fundraising, and other agency initiatives.
- Other agency needs as directed by the Executive Director.
Qualifications:
- Experience in crisis intervention, peer counseling, and providing legal advocacy.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with diverse populations in an empathetic and non-judgmental manner.
- Must have reliable transportation, valid driver's license, and insurance.
- Flexibility to participate in on-call shifts as required.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and support agency goals.
- Must be willing to get a background check.
