Position Summary:
The Migrant Education Program (MEP) provides supplemental, summer instruction for migrant students, focusing on literacy skills and math computation/comprehension to K-8 students. The goal of the MEP Interventionist will be to help students achieve academic learning targets in reading and math. Familiar intervention resources will be used such as PRESS and Building Fact Fluency, among others.
The students' day is divided broadly into two sections. From breakfast until lunch, we focus on academics. For students in grades K-8, we particularly focus on foundational reading and math skills. The teachers collaborate with each other and the coordinator to develop an instructional program that will deliver reasonable academic gains in a 5 week program. The district office through the coordinator delivers curricular and other material resources to support in delivering these reasonable, instructional goals. Bilingual EA support is provided as needed. The second part of the day is focused on enrichment. This can include STEAM activities, physical fitness, community outreach, field trips, and more. Teachers' interests and passions often drive this part of the day. MEP teachers work collaboratively to plan various activities for the students. By being placed at the Middle School, we have access to the fitness room, gym, prairie, soccer and baseball fields, and more. The Interventionist will likely continue their work through the afternoon by pulling students for brief periods of time from enrichment activities when needed. There will be times when the Interventionist will assist with enrichment activities, particularly field trips including all students.
Teachers need to commit to 3 days of planning (4 hours / day) and 5 weeks of instruction (4 days / week; 7.7 hours / day). The only absences that will be approved during this time are for illness. Hiring is dependent on enrollment.
Qualifications:
Valid MN Teaching License required. Bilingual skills in Spanish and experience serving underserved youth and strong Reading and/or English Language background desired. Current Owatonna Public School District employee preferred. Consistent and reliable attendance.
