Position Summary:
The elementary Migrant Education Program (MEP) teachers provide supplemental, summer instruction for migrant students, focusing on literacy skills and math computation/comprehension to K-5 elementary students. This position will include providing content, language, and experiential learning in the classroom.
The students' day is divided broadly into two sections. From breakfast until lunch, we focus on academics. For elementary students, we particularly focus on foundational reading and math skills. The elementary teachers collaborate with each other and the coordinator to develop an instructional program that will deliver reasonable academic gains in a 5 week program. The district office through the Coordinator delivers curricular and other material resources to support in delivering these reasonable, instructional goals. Bilingual EA support is provided. The team of elementary teachers will collaborate with and direct the activities of the Bilingual EA to maximize benefits to the students. The second part of the day is focused on enrichment. This can include STEAM activities, physical fitness, community outreach, field trips, and more. Teachers' interests and passions often drive this part of the day. MEP teachers work collaboratively to plan various activities for the students. By being placed at the Middle School, we have access to the fitness room, gym, prairie, soccer and baseball fields, and more.
Teachers need to commit to 3 days of planning (4 hours / day) and 5 weeks of instruction (4 days / week; 7.7 hours / day). The only absences that will be approved during this time are for illness. Hiring is dependent on enrollment.
Qualifications:
Valid MN Teaching License required. Bilingual skills in Spanish and experience serving underserved youth and strong Reading and/or English Language background desired. Current Owatonna Public School District employee preferred. Consistent and reliable attendance.
