Position Summary Information
General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Superintendent, Physical Plant, the Custodian is responsible for cleanliness, sanitation, and orderliness both inside and outside of areas assigned, and for the removal of waste collected. Regular work for this part-time position is 1:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is a part-time regular position.
Clean All Aspects of the Assigned Area
Clean and disinfect sinks, toilets, trash receptacles, and mop restroom floors. Clean and fill toilet paper and paper towel dispensers. Clean mirrors, handrails, floors, glass doors, windows, window ledges, file cabinets, blinds, shelves, tables, chairs, dry-erase boards, ceilings, diffusers, and air ducts. Vacuum, empty trash cans, and replace liners.
Secure Area
Assure all doors are locked and lights turned off before leaving the area.
Assist with Room Set-Ups
Transport tables and chairs for classroom/area set-ups and return them to storage after events. Install floor coverings in the gym. Pull out bleachers, and set up the stage, podium, and sporting equipment.
Safety and Security
Understand the dangers and safety precautions in the use of chemicals. Display “wet floor” signs when appropriate and remove them when floors are dry.
Essential Functions
- Clean All Aspects of Assigned Area- Clean and disinfect sinks, toilets, and trash receptacles. Clean and fill toilet paper and paper towel dispensers. Clean mirrors, handrails, floors, glass doors, windows, window ledges, coat racks, file cabinets, blinds, shelves, tables, chairs, chalkboards, dry-erase boards, ceilings, diffusers, and air ducts. Empty trash cans and replace liners. Dry mop, wet mop and clean the grease pit with the Hotsy. Able to work safely with cleaning chemicals.
- Shop floor concrete is to be degreased with lye in a mop bucket. Etch concrete floors with muriatic acid. Squeegee floors. Put down hi-dri safety absorbent after oil spills. Apply finish and sealer after stripping, to tile and concrete floors, ramps, and steps. Clean floor drains with a shovel and scraper, removing sand, gravel, and sludge with a shovel. Lift and dump the material from the drain into the waste barrel and dispose of it.

Marginal Functions
- Assist with snow removal from steps and walks around buildings.
- Able to work with cleaning chemicals.
- May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
- Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
- Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to read and understand and/or follow directions related to hazardous materials.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor, campus staff, and student workers – both in writing, in person, and on the phone.
- Knowledge and ability to use safe lifting and moving techniques.
- Knowledge and ability to safely operate power cleaning equipment after receiving instructions.
- Ability/skill to drive automobiles and light trucks.
- Ability to use basic computer skills.
- PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to work and move in a standing or slightly stooped position over extended periods of time (90-95 percent of work time).
- Ability to work and walk on hard surfaces (mostly concrete).
- Possess hand/eye coordination and physical strength necessary to operate power cleaning equipment such as scrubbers, buffers, carpet cleaners, vacuum cleaners, etc.
- Ability to perform functions, where required, wearing safety glasses. Ability to work in restroom areas with gasses/fumes from cleaning/sanitation chemicals.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds, carry 20 pounds, and slide objects weighing 60 pounds on a regular basis.
- Be able to work and walk on wet surfaces.
- Must be able to use a ladder when cleaning overhead.
- The individual must possess the skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- At least sixteen (16) years of age or older.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Ability to Qualify for Auto Insurance Coverage.
- Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in custodial work.
Desired Qualifications
- High school graduate or GED with vocational training or on-the-job training; or
- AAS degree in a related technical area.
Salary
$14.77 per hour

Schedule
Normal hours of work for this part-time regular position are scheduled by the College generally between 1:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, based on a 29-hour workweek, based on a 260-day work calendar. Scheduled special activities, emergencies, or temporary schedule changes may require hours outside of the regular workday or workweek.
